Birthdays mark the fact that we are a year older. What’s a year? It is the Earth taking a 365-day journey around the sun.
If you want to teach your kid a little lesson about the planets while celebrating his or her birthday, a fun idea is to make a big sun piñata. You can do this with just your birthday kid or as a group activity at his or her birthday party. After you have made the piñata and filled it with goodies, have your kid walk around it once for each year he or she has celebrated a birthday (for example, if it is a third birthday, have your child walk around the sun three times). If this is an activity at a birthday party, explain to the guests that each year marks another 365-day journey around the sun. After the party kid is done, have each guest walk around the sun as many times as their age. Explain that since it isn’t everyone’s birthday, everyone is in a different place around the sun. After all the guests have had a turn, break open the piñata for lots of fun!!
You can also carry out this unique activity without a party. It may be easier to make a simple paper mache sun that you pull out each year for the birthday kid’s traditional walk.
This is an educational and fun activity and can be something to look forward to whether a party is on or not.
Happy trails!
