Godfather-ing: Teens and Party Presents

A very interesting recent topic came my way today as I reading some comments on other blogs…someone said that her son is 15 years old and still expects to have an annual birthday party. Also, that he doesn’t want presents from his friends and family anymore, but rather acts like the “Godfather” and collects the cash as they walk into the party. The rest of the party is compiled of video games and cake galore…with no end!

I say this is a pretty good gig if you can get it!!

Mock Phone Call To Entertainer

So, you have decided the type of entertainer you would like…how do you select one?

Usually, this is the time that you have to do some homework. Look at the directories on the Web and the listings in the parent magazines and draw up a list of the entertainers. Let’s say you have decided to have a clown entertain at your 4 year olds’ party. Here is a handy list of basic questions that I recommend you ask the entertainer on those initial phone calls: Read the rest of this entry »

Make Your Own Outrageous Cookie Concoctions

A fabulous budget party idea that is super simple to put together with little time is to invite your kid’s party guests to be “silly cookie bakers” for an afternoon. Before the party begins, make up a batch of cookie dough. You can even buy ready-made dough if you prefer to save even more time. Provide each kid with their own bowl of cookie dough. This is where it gets interesting: simply open your refrigerator door and cupboards and start pulling out condiments. Here’s a good starter list:

  1. Ketchup
  2. Mustard
  3. Ranch dressing
  4. Mayo
  5. Steak sauce
  6. Balsamic vinegar
  7. Jam
  8. Pesto sauce
  9. Tomato sauce
  10. Relish

The Party Creep… Phenomenon

What exactly is this phenomenon dubbed “party creep?” Essentially, it is having the intention of throwing a simple party, but adding X, Y, & Z to enhance it. What was going to be one simple party activity turns into 10 party activities including games, activities, and candles with prizes to boot. It could also mean starting off with a guest list of five kids, but then feeling the need to invite the kids in the neighborhood too and all of the kids’ siblings. Planning a party for 5 kids and ending up with 20 is quite a different party.

In this day of throwing wonderful parties for your kids, it is easy to feel the “party creep” and have your kids’ party turn into a more extravagant party in terms of numbers, time, and budget. Before you even know it, what you originally started to plan for you cannot even recognize.

Asking for Donations Instead of Gifts

Donating to a charity instead of bringing birthday giftsIf you would like people bring donations to a good cause in lieu of presents for the birthday kid, the more specific you can be about where the donation is going, the better. People like to know what charity will be receiving their gifts.

Examples of local community organizations: Read the rest of this entry »
