Trademarked Costume Characters In the News

Dora_art_200v_20080722090302 Peppers and Pollywogs is often asked how to find those really popular characters (think Elmo and Dora) for their upcoming kid’s party!  It is often really difficult to find an actual Elmo or Dora, you may instead find Traveling Girl with Backpack or Red Puppet instead.  Consumers often aren’t happy with these knock-off characters and prefer that the licensed character actually attend an entertain the children.

Recently, the WSJ spotlighted this problem, i.e the fact that entertainers are not legally allowed to appear as the actual character due to worries over trademark infringement.  The WSJ Law Blog has an interesting take on the problem and the comments are worth a read too.  It is unfortunate that the homemade character costumes often look odd and don’t really showcase the character that the kids know and love.  The example of the 4-year-old’s party where Dora seemed scary is often a common problem when these entertainers are hired.  It isn’t the entertainers fault, but rather the law.  It is illegal for these entertainers to appear exactly as the character.

Joker Halloween Costume

Joker The Dark Knight is still so popular.  Joker is surely going to be an especially popular costume this season.  What’s even better about a Joker costume is it is completely no-sew and easily created.  Take a look at this Joker … you need a disheveled suit, a good make-up kit, and a pack of Joker cards for the trick or treater to toss around.  Really, it is that simple.

Guest Party Blogger: Susan Benson

I am happy to introduce you to my Guest Party Blogger, Susan Benson, who blogs at G-day Y’all.  She is an ex-pat American from Texas, living in Australia.  Having lived in Oz myself, I really appreciate Susan’s insights into the differences between kids’ parties in the US and parties in Oz…she sums it up so well, and even includes birthday party lingo language translation.  V. interesting & true!  A very warm welcome to Susan.  Enjoy!

Today, the Handsome Australian and I dressed our little ones in their best “party clothes” and headed out to celebrate the first birthday of our friends’ son. Whilst at the party, I started to ponder a lot of the uniquely Australian aspects at play. This is not the first child’s birthday party we’ve attended here, quite the opposite we’ve been to many. The Handsome Australian was born and raised here and obviously experienced many a party in his youth, but the whole Australian Children’s Birthday Party scene was new to me until a few years ago when we had our own kids and we began the birthday party circuit.
