Sweet 16 Masquerade Ball

shutterstock_28366222Sweet 16 is such a special birthday for kids … it’s often thought of as a grand time for a celebration. Has anyone seen MTV’s show My Super Sweet 16? Well, you probably don’t want to go that over the top, but a special masquerade ball with your kid’s friends would be a memorable way to celebrate.

Pick your colors: The best way to start is to pick your colors for the evening. Will it be black and silver, or purple and pearly white? Once you have chosen your colors, you can buy card stock in one of them and print the masquerade ball details in the second color (for example, silver card stock with black print). Match the type of font you use to the tone you want to set for the evening. A ball is usually very elegant.

New Year’s Kids Celebration

If you are ringing in the New Year with a family party at your home this year, you may find that you have a bunch of kids to entertain.  It will be fun for the adults to have time to gather, socialize, and toast the New Year together.  Yet, how to keep the kids, most likely of different ages, entertained during the long evening to midnight?  Here are some kid-friendly suggestions for a great celebration this year:

  • Send a blow horn as the invitation.  When the people blow the horn, attach a piece of paper to the “roll” part of the horn with the party details.  Clever and easy to do!  Make sure to ask everyone to dress up in party gear.
  • Instead of decorating the house or the kids’ party room beforehand, have all of the decorations on hand for the kids to do the decorating.  Have balloons, streamers, confetti, party hats, and noisemakers laid out for this first activity.
  • Make Party Hats as a craft, or if you are heavy on the little girls, enjoy a New Year’s blinking tiara.

Carols and Cocoa Gathering

shutterstock_7914067Does your neighborhood have an annual tradition of caroling together? I remember in one friend’s neighborhood the tradition of neighbors gathering together and going to the various homes for carols and cocoa. It was tons of fun. My friends had a pot of fresh, homemade cocoa for the carolers. It is a great event to organize this season with the kids.

Put out a flyer for a “Carols and Cocoa” evening in your neighborhood. Make it the early evening hours (4:30 to 6:30 pm) on a Sunday night perhaps, which may be a bit quieter than other days of the week. Decide who in your family wants to get all bundled up and sing carols with the group. The other members of the family, must also play the important part of making the cocoa or other goodies that will be handed out when they come to your house.

1. To decorate a cardboard tube that may hold anything from a poster to a fishing pole, wrap plain white butcher paper around the tube and then make it into a candy cane stick by adding a wide red ribbon that is wrapped around the tube. Use a glue stick or glue gun to stick the ribbon ends at the top and bottom of the tube. Really festive!
