Recently I was asked if people should celebrate their dogs’ birthday! I say resoundingly, OF COURSE! Dogs are truly a part of your family, and deserve lots of special attention ~ especially on their birthday!
When I was a child, I always celebrated Pepper’s birthday ~ he was my Scotty! We baked a cake in the shape of a huge bone and decorated it with white icing and “Happy Birthday, Pepper!” scripted. We didn’t, of course, allow him to eat any of the sweet cake, but we also made him a special “dog food” cake and stuck a candle atop the kibbly, wet mound. I helped him blow out his candle. We all sang “Happy Birthday” to him and he was excited and barked like crazy! Pepper knew something was happening and it involved him!
Another year, we had a huge gathering of Pepper’s friends from the neighborhood. They all came over and we put Party Hats on their furry heads, and they all walked around one another sniffing each other and generally catching up on the big day!
Since it was a special day, the “goody bags” were mini Milkbones that each dog took home with their owner. Pepper had a grand old time catching up with his pals…again another way to make the day special.
If children and puppies are both going to attend, it would be fun to have dog themed party goods.
Human treats can also be shaped like a dog bone. This will be sure to get the giggles going. If you really want to be extravagant, you can hire a pet party planner…I found one recently in City Dog, a Pacific Northwest magazine in Seattle. Your dog deserves much happiness on his birthday! Go ahead and live it up! Celebrate your pooch!
