For my son’s 6th birthday, my in-laws have rented a Hummer for one hour for the birthday boy and five of his closest friends after school one afternoon. It was strictly a gesture on their part, and not particularly something I would have planned, especially given that we are on a tight budget. I am worried that other parents will think that we are rich snobs…beyond that, I’m not sure what to do with these kids for one hour in the Hummer. Help!
Well, it is a very kind gesture of your in-laws to rent a Hummer for this special hour of fun for your kid and his good friends. I doubt anyone will mention that you must be “rich” in order to be able to afford such a party. If you do hear something like this, you can mention that this was his grandparent’s gift to him for his birthday. That will make it clear. You can’t help what people will think otherwise, and you will have to just let that be and simply enjoy it. The generous spirit of your in-laws is the important thing, and this will definitely be a unique party for your son and his friends.
For things to do, take some fun snacks and drinks, as it will be right after school, and the kids will be hungry. Bring pieces of fruit, gummy fruit, snack mix, small bags of cookies, a batch of cupcakes, etc. Bring juice boxes as well. Don’t forget napkins and small plates, all should be paper for easy cleanup.
Inside the limo, you can have small balloons blown up and a “Happy Birthday” banner hung up.
Once the party begins, pop in a DVD that your son really wants to watch or if they are able to play video games on the TV, that would be another option. It is only one hour and so between eating, watching a video, and generally looking around and playing with the gadgets, the time will go by quickly. You could have some fun printables for the kids to color as well or you could play games like “I Spy” and charades using only their hands and expressive faces, the kids must act out their words. This may be a good party for the birthday kid to open his presents if they are brought with them into the Hummer as well.
If you are uncomfortable with such a party in future years, then plan your next party well in advance so that the plan is already made and your in-laws will not have the opportunity to take the planning into their own hands. This year, enjoy it. It is unique and the kids will feel really special and have fun!
