shutterstock_1959802Australia Day is the country’s national day of celebration, much like the 4th of July in the US. It reminds its citizens to remember their origins and celebrate their achievements.

So how do Australians celebrate with their family and friends? Try and translate this one: “Pop over and throw a few snags & chops on the barbie, knock a few coldies down, bring the softies for the ankle biters, plonk your butt and have a natter, it will be a ripper of a day.” Basically, come over and enjoy a BBQ, have some drinks and soda pop for the kids, and stay awhile for a chat.

If you are looking for ideas on how to celebrate Australia Day with your kids, and/or teach your kids a bit about Australia, have a look at the following ideas:

  • Enjoy a “Barbie” — BBQ anything and everything!
  • Flag waving is important, have the kids make small Australian flags using construction paper, markers, and crayons, and attach them to small sticks for waving.
  • Make a Swagman’s Hat. Tie corks around the brim of a floppy hat!
  • Make a Boomerang. Cut out a boomerang shape out of brown card stock, and then use bright colored shapes, pipe cleaners, markers, etc. to decorate.
  • Trace a cheerful koala!
  • Make an origami koala.
  • Take up or learn about an Aussie sport, such as Aussie Rules Football, a sport completely unique to the country.
  • Serve Vegemite (a veggie spread for your bread) sandwiches and Milo, chocolate powder that you add to milk!
  • Enjoy Lamingtons for dessert!
  • Draw pictures and learn about the unique Australian animals, including the koala, the platypus, the roo, the tasmanian devil, and the echidna.
  • Sing “Advance Australia Fair” — the country’s national anthem.
