Often, Barnyard Animals are a popular theme for a small child’s birthday party, and there are lots of ideas to make this party fun for the ages of 1 to 5.
Here are some ideas for your party plan:
This is a great party to either go to a petting zoo or have some farm animals come to your home. Check to see if there is any entertainment of this sort in your community. The children will be fascinated with the animals.
Or, if you are considering an outside venue, this is also a good time to head to a farm area to host the party. You may want to look for one that offers hay rides as this will be a lot of fun for everyone—Mom and Dad included!
A Mylar Cow Balloon would also be loads of fun. Attach it to the birthday child’s chair.

A fun centerpiece idea is to take a fabulous set of brown boots, hopefully with a western outline on it, and place big bright, bold sunflowers in them. It looks so festive and it’s so easy!
Place buckets on the party table with each of the kids names on them—you can either write the names with a marker or use letter stickers. Place stickers into the buckets and the kids can further decorate their buckets while at the party table. These holders can also be used as the goody holders.
Upon the kids’ arrival, provide them with a straw hat and a bandana. The kids could decorate their straw hats upon arrival with animal cutouts, hay, flowers, etc.
Play Pin the Hat on the Cowboy.
Play Hot Pumpkin or Squash.
Play Animal Charades.
Play bluegrass/country music to keep with the theme.
Have guests wear farm attire. Take a picture of them sitting on a bail of hay with the birthday kid. Include this in your thank you note.
Purchase bails of hay (good decoration for this theme as well) and hide prizes, pennies, etc. into the stacks for the kids to find.
For the menu, serve “Pigs in a Blanket,” baked beans, corn on the cob, corn bread, animal crackers, animal gummies, baby carrots.
Goody Bags can include: farm animal Beanie Baby, animal stickers, small plastic farm animals, Farm PEZ candy holders, barnyard Celebration Chocolate farm animals, clear soap with a farm animal inside, etc. You could give this to them in a little bucket that has your kid’s name and birthdate on it or in a burlap bag.
Here is a Barn Birthday Sheet Cake, which looks really easy to do, and truly looks like a barn:
