Big Fun in Small Spaces…
So, you live in a small home or apartment and you have kids coming for a party that you will host in this space. You really must consider what space you have to plan a party that will work. When planning a kids party in a tight space, do NOT over-invite…the rule of inviting the number of kids that is the age of your child will work especially well in a small space if the child is 6 and under. If the child is older, you may have to have a limited guest list, i.e. inviting 2-3 of your child’s closest friends.
Some ideas for a small space…
Make sure to rearrange the furniture, to make more room for the birthday party. Push your furniture against the wall. This will create extra space.
Play Games! You could get some of your child’s favorite games and perhaps a new one and play them together. Make sure to “spice” it up a bit by providing prizes and/or accessories that make the game-playing “special” for that day. As an example, if you are playing charades, make sure that the kid doing the charades is dressed up in something fun.
Play a favorite movie. Make it a day at the movies as a theme, and have the kids come dressed as a character from the movie, watch the movie, and then play a few organized games that relate to the movie characters. As an example, if it is Monsters the movie, you could find little games, party favors, and foods that all relate to the theme. The party would be good for a tight space, because the majority of time they will be watching the video.
Make the space work for you. If you are having a 5 year old birthday party, and you invite 5 guests…you can rent two small round tables and 6 small chairs. If you have this set up in an area in your place, you could do a craft, you could invite an entertainer in, who has specifically related to you how they can do their performance in a small space, and then have the kids eat cake and ice cream in this same area. As long as the kids are busy or engaged in watching something they should be able to stay in the area of the tables and chairs. One thing key is keeping them busy doing a craft, watching the entertainer, and eating cake/ice cream. If they are busy, they will stay in or around their seats. Of course, you must look at the age of the children to gauge this correctly.
There’s no reason to go out to McDonald’s just because you have a small space to party in…just plan it carefully and your space, no matter how small, will be the heart of the party!
