Is it always expected that birthday cake will be served at kids’ parties? We want to try something “different” as the sweet treat at out kid’s upcoming party, like decorating cookies or serving parfaits. Our kid really doesn’t like cake very much. Will other parents think this is strange?
The first and most important consideration is what the birthday kid will most enjoy. Let this consideration guide you in determining what to serve at your kids’ upcoming party. Traditionally speaking, cake is usually served at kids’ parties, but just because this is what is always served does not mean you must do the same, especially if your kid doesn’t like cake.
Also, kids are attending so many parties today, where the majority of time they have been served cake. If they attend your party and are served a wonderful parfait or gourmet cookie, this will certainly be different and exciting for the kids.
Last, in this modern day of celebrating kids’ birthdays, parents are doing all sorts of sweets to serve kids rather than just straight cake. Some examples include: cupcakes, ice cream sundaes, decorating gourmet cookies, Jell-O Jigglers, etc. Also, so many parties are based on themes today, and often a favorite idea is to make a pudding and crush Oreo cookies or plain cookies to look like dirt or sand and then adding gummy animals adds further fun, i.e. gummy worms. People are becoming very creative today, outside of traditional cakes.
You can never go wrong when you make a favorite for the birthday kid! If anyone makes a comment like, “Where’s the cake?” Just smile and say, “Cake is the tried and true, but we wanted to mix it up with something special that’s our kid’s favorite.” Short and sweet, and will get your point across.
