A butterfly theme will make for a wonderful birthday party. Check out Celebrate Express’s mod butterfly party supplies to bring your theme together.
Here are some budget-friendly ideas to help you plan:
For the Decorations:
Choose a few butterfly colors, such as yellow, lavender, mint green, pink, or iridescent white, to decorate with. Buy helium balloons in these colors and hang them around the party area. You could also buy one special butterfly balloon to attach to the birthday kids’ special chair.
Buy streamers in the same color scheme, and connect them using plastic butterflies (these can be found at a craft store). If you can find them, buy and spray paint some white styrofoam butterfly shapes and use them as connectors. Hang them all around the party room. You could also use the butterflies on the party table.
Cut butterflies out of construction paper, decorate them, and place them all over the party room.
Buy plastic butterfly yard sticks and have them arranged in a path leading to your front door.
You can purchase butterfly tableware at Birthday in a Box, or you can use solid partyware in the color scheme you have chosen. Also, you could use a white paper tablecloth and provide the kids with crayons to draw butterflies with while they are eating.
For the Party Menu:
Make small sandwiches filled with whatever you kid likes best, and cut them out in butterfly shapes.
Serve butterfly-shaped Pepperidge Farm crackers. You could also cut cheese slices into the same shape.
Serve a cold bow-tie pasta salad. The pasta looks like little butterflies!
Cut out a large watermelon in a butterfly shape and fill it with fresh fruit salad.
Serve pink lemonade out of a clean watering can!
For the Cake:
Make butterfly cupcakes. Bake a batch of cupcakes and frost them with white icing. To make the butterflies on top, use small gummy worms for their bodies, halved orange candy slices for their wings, and red rope licorice for their antennae. Decorate their wings with Skittles.
FamilyFun.com has a darling butterfly birthday cake you can make:

For the Games and Activities:
- Lay out pictures of butterflies and some crayons and/or a butterfly puzzle. When the kids need a break, they can go to this table for some quiet play.
- Have an adult help out and paint small butterflies on the kids’ faces as they enter the party.
- Cut out large butterfly wings from colored cardboard. When the kids arrive, they can color, paint, and decorate the wings. When they are done, tie the wings together with string so they can wear them. They can also make butterfly antennae with plastic headbands, pipe cleaners, and pom pom balls. They can wear these throughout the party.
- Have the kids act as butterflies and go outdoors to gather “nectar”—candy that you have hidden in the yard.
- Play Wrap the Butterfly in a Cocoon: split the kids up into two teams, and provide them with rolls of toilet paper. Have the kids roll a designated adult in the paper. Whichever team covers the person the quickest wins! The butterfly will then break free of its cocoon!
- You could also have a butterfly hunt. Cut out small butterflies from colored paper and line Smarties candies down the middle. Have the kids find the butterflies and enjoy the candy!
- Make sugar cookies in the shape of butterflies. Lay out frosting and candies, and have the kids decorate and eat their butterfly cookie creations.
- Play Pin the Body on the Butterfly
- Have a cotton candy cocoon eating contest: buy balls of cotton candy (”cocoons”) and attach them to a outdoor clothesline. Have the kids line up in front of their own cocoon with their hands tied behind their backs, and then eat their cocoon off of the line. Whoever finishes first wins!
For the Goody Bags:
Paint butterflies on small clear jars. Fill the jars with candies that match your color scheme, such as gummies or M&M’s.
Purchase little butterfly nets and fill them with candies, butterfly stickers, little magnifying glasses, butterfly hair clips, notepads, erasers, pencils, etc.

If you can’t find nets, buy brightly colored lunch bags, decorate them with butterfly stickers, and fill them with the goodies.
