Thank You Notes

The Art of Saying Thanks…

So, the guests have left, your party was a true success with your birthday kid feeling special and happy…the big day is over.

You may have decided to open the presents during the party, or to save them for a private opening without friends around. Either way is perfectly acceptable.

Hand-Written Thank You’s or E-mail Thanks: Which One Do You Do?

The party is over, your child received a bundle of great gifts…so, the next step…the thank you notes, of course! Traditionally, thank you notes are hand-written, stamped, and mailed. Yet, people are beginning to embrace e-thank you’s today. Check out The Juggle’s article on the topic…the comments are especially interesting, i.e. what the community feels about the concept. It’s a mixed bag as suspected.

I love the idea of real mail sent through the old fashioned post office myself, and almost any birthday theme out there has corresponding thank you cardsCelebrate Express alone has over nine pages of thank you cards to choose from. However, I understand limited time is definitely a concern today among busy parents.  Also, if you have taken digital pictures at your party, it is very time-efficient to upload a photo from the party and embed it in a photo e-thank you. This is another alternative idea that is gaining popularity.

Only One Present @ Joint Party Mentioned In Thank You Note…

We recently attended a birthday party for two children in the same family.  We know both kids, and brought a present for each one.  I have just received the thank you note and it only mentions one of the gifts that we bought for only one of the kids.  I am worried that the other child did not receive our present, or that they don’t know that we also brought a gift for their other child.  Is it OK to call and ask about it?

Well, since the gifts were not opened at the party, you certainly look to the thank you note to hear that your gifts have been received and acknowledged.  Also, you took time to pick out two different gifts for two different kids and you want to make sure that both were received.  Still, it is most likely that your present was received, but they didn’t actually keep track of all of the presents and who they were from; thus, when the notes were written, they forgot to mention one of the presents.

shutterstock_109166141It’s been a month since my kid’s birthday party, and I am just getting around to sending the thank you notes. Is it too late?

Never! The point is that you remembered, and better late than never! Enjoy writing them…it will be a pleasant reminder of appreciation for your guests!

Thank You Note Forgot to Mention All of My Gifts

Thank You NotesI recently received a thank you note from a party my daughter attended. We gave three small items, i.e. a shirt, small toy, and hair clips. I have just received the thank you note from her parents, and they only mentioned one of the three gifts. In all of the chaos of opening the gifts, I think my gifts got tangled in with others, and the parents probably don’t realize that we gave three things to her daughter and not just the shirt. Should I ask, or is this being petty?

Given the gift giving that you have described at the party, most likely the card got lost from the three gifts. When things got back to normal and she organized the cards with gifts, she probably honestly didn’t realize that you gave three things and not just one. The thank you for the gift is sincere, and you also know she received the gifts you brought because you saw her open them. I wouldn’t say anything, and just accept that with the chaos of the moment, things weren’t tracked as well as they could have been. It sometimes happens at parties with the best of intentions.

Thank You’s from the Littlest Ones

Are thank you notes necessary at a one year old’s party when you have already said thanks at the actual party?

Even if your child is too young to write a note with your help, and even if you have already said thanks at the actual party…taking a moment to write a small note and to send it in the mail is a special touch that will make your guests feel special as you acknowledge their thoughtful gift for your child.

An alternative idea to actual snail mail thank you’s, could be an e-greeting that says thanks. It is not as personal, but is certainly better than no acknowledgement after the party ends.
