An Alternative Version of the Pinata

shutterstock_81302621Do your kids love piñatas at their parties, but you are less-than-thrilled with the kids being blindfolded, whacking at an object to get it to break? A traditional piñata is tons of fun for kids, but can be dangerous if other kids are nearby, and also when it breaks, the stuff can fall on kids’ heads, etc. As a result, enjoying a piñata at a party takes a good deal of supervision.

The idea of a treasure ball may appeal to you if you are looking for the fun without these concerns. Check out the idea! It looks and feels like a piñata, but the kids toss it or kick it back and forth to break the treasure ball. This alternative version encourages activity, that lasts quite awhile, and when it breaks, most likely, everyone has had the opportunity to have touched the ball.

Appropriate Age for a Pinata?

What age is appropriate for Pinatas? Kids always love a Pinata as a party game.  It’s a great activity as you can often find them to match just about any theme, you can have older kids make a Pinata, and you can stuff the Pinata with age-appropriate party fun.  Kids who are three or older will be safe with the Pinata.  Make sure to keep the following guidelines in mind when planning:

  • Hang the Pinata low enough that the kids can easily hit it.
  • Have the kids use a plastic bat to hit the Pinata.
  • Fill the Pinata with stuff that is age-appropriate.  The most common filling is candy, but you could also fill it with soft toys if you are worried that the kids will get hurt when the Pinata breaks.
  • Keep it organized, i.e. have the other guests who are not hitting the Pinata stand back from the area and out of potentially being hit by the bat.
  • Have an adult supervise the kid who is blindfolded and trying to hit the Pinata to keep him in the general vicinity of the pinata and on track to hit it.
  • When it breaks, have little baskets or bags available for the kids to collect their goodies in.  You may want to hand these out before the game begins because when it breaks there will be a flurry of excitement to get to the goodies.

Toy Story Pinata

It can often be difficult to find pre-made pinatas for the licensed characters from kids’ favorite movies, such as Toy Story.

On E-Bay, there is a store called Yorkballooncompany that has a very good selection if you need a Buzz Light Year or Woody Pull String Pinata. They are brand new and are priced at $14.99. There are more than just the Toy Story Characters as you can find My Little Pony, Curious George, and more as well.

Pinata Fun!

Pinatas are a hugely fun and entertaining piece of parties ~ and remain popular no matter how old the children are. I have seen 4 year olds delight in them, as well as 2 year olds. They are a truly fantastic idea.

Also, with Cinco de Mayo coming up on May 5th, this might be a great way to celebrate the day as well!
