Carols and Cocoa Gathering

shutterstock_7914067Does your neighborhood have an annual tradition of caroling together? I remember in one friend’s neighborhood the tradition of neighbors gathering together and going to the various homes for carols and cocoa. It was tons of fun. My friends had a pot of fresh, homemade cocoa for the carolers. It is a great event to organize this season with the kids.

Put out a flyer for a “Carols and Cocoa” evening in your neighborhood. Make it the early evening hours (4:30 to 6:30 pm) on a Sunday night perhaps, which may be a bit quieter than other days of the week. Decide who in your family wants to get all bundled up and sing carols with the group. The other members of the family, must also play the important part of making the cocoa or other goodies that will be handed out when they come to your house.

Easy Holiday Menu Ideas

It’s a great time of year to make a festive holiday menu – whether for a holiday party, an informal gathering, tree trimming, and beyond – it’s easy to take what you have around your kitchen and make it merry and bright for your kids.

Check out these easy holiday menu ideas to keep ‘em happy this season:

  • Use festive cookie cutters to cut out yummy sandwiches filled with anything that is easy, cream cheese and strawberry jam would be festive
  • Make a Rudolph Reindeer sandwich. Start with any type of sandwich and cut it diagonally to create two triangles. Add two raisins for the eyes, six raisins for the mouth, slide broken pretzel bits between the slices of bread for the horns, and half a cherry for the nose
  • Turn any round cracker into a snowman’s face. First spread the cracker with cream cheese, and then add small slivers of carrots and black olives to create a face
  • Reindeer Munch. Add red and green M&M candies to a Chex Mix (or a batch of Cinnamon-Apple Chex Mix).
  • “Snowballs.” Serve donut holes rolled in powdered sugar.
  • Serve Snowman Shakes — vanilla milkshake in a snowman mug!
  • Serve holiday cookies with peppermint ice cream.
  • Pretzel rods dipped in melted chocolate, “Reindeer Antlers”
  • Make Edible Christmas Trees. Provide kids with a sugar cone that they turn upside down on a paper plate. The kids can then decorate their “tree” with green frosting (vanilla frosting mixed with some drops of green food coloring) and candy sprinkles.

Holiday Cookie Party with the Kids

shutterstock_22121716 If you are looking for a kids’ holiday party idea that can be used as a stand-alone party, as part of a birthday party, or just a traditional gathering during the festive season … why not make cookies? If the idea appeals, it is really quite easy to put together.

One note: take into account the age of the kids who will be attending to determine how much actual baking will be done. If small kids will be there, having the cookies prepared beforehand and having them decorate the cookies would be excellent. A little bit older kids could handle rolling out chilled dough, cutting them into shapes with cookie cutters, doing an activity while they bake and cool, and then decorating. Older kids will appreciate taking on the challenge of making the cookies themselves from start to finish.
