Cheese is one of the most popular party places for kids, who knew?

Would you ask your kids to contribute to paying for birthday party gifts to take to the birthday parties.  i have discussed how drawing up a present budget is often essential so that you know exactly how much you want to spend on all of these parties, but with the going rate being $20, is it unusual to split the cost of the presents with your kid? SavingAdvice.com showcases one father who does exactly that and who notes that it helps his kids determine which parties to attend, how to budget, and the voice they get when they contribute to the gift that is being chosen.

What do you think?  In these or any other economic times, is it a good idea to ask your kids to contribute to paying for party gifts?

During the season of holiday parties, are you wondering whether to take your kids to holiday parties or leave them with a sitter?  The Gilroy Dispatch discusses quick tips on determining if you should or should not take them, and what to do if you decide to bring them along.

The Muppet Whatnot Workshop

muppets FAO Schwarz is exclusively offering kids the opportunity to create their own Muppet Whatnot!  Kids can design their own Muppet either at the store in NYC or on-line beginning in February 2009,

For those not familiar with Muppet vocabulary, a Whatnot is a generic extra used in Muppet productions. And the workshop gives customers the chance to design their very own classic hand-rod puppet to their own specification, taking their pick of body style and color, eyes, nose, hair and outfit.

As of late October 2008, customers can drop in at FAO Schwartz’s New York store and design their Muppet of choice using a design kit. Staff assistance is on offer, along with video tutorials delivered by famous Muppet characters, displayed on screens around the workshop. Customers watch their Whatnot being constructed, which takes about 20 minutes, before taking it home along with the design kit as a souvenir. Designing and ordering can also be done through FAO’s website. The design kit costs $130 and covers manufacturing costs. Customers currently have to collect their design from the New York store, although from February 2009 they can submit orders online.

The Elf on the Shelf Tradition

Do you find yourself telling your kids this time of year, “You better be good because Santa will know if you’re being naughty or nice!” That’s a favorite tune out of many parents’ moths this time of year, but your kids may wonder how exactly does Santa know? Thus, the tradition of Elf on a Shelf.

The Elf is around your home (you can move him at will) and he reports to Santa on the daily behavior of the kids back to Santa. It makes this a fun game and motivates the kids to stay nice throughout the season.

A cute and ingenious idea! One that has become a tradition for many households as well!

Check it out!

Parties to Help Pets

Puppy Party Kids and pets often go hand-in-hand.  Now there seems to be a trend toward hosting Puppy Parties for kids…literally, not just as a theme!  A recent article on Mom Logic notes that Galaxy Entertainment in Los Angeles says their Puppy Parties are their most popular.  They take small breeds that are known to the company to the parties and introduce real puppies to the kids at the puppy party.  Now, that’s thematic.  It also seems to work for a long-term adoption.  By the time the puppies are six months, most have been adopted by the party guests and clients.  Great theme, and doing good to help puppies!

Speaking of helping pets, especially this holiday season, here is a great article on how kids can help homeless and shelter pets during the upcoming holiday season that are easy and helpful.

Some of these ideas include:

  1. Set up a pet food bank
  2. Host a home holiday party on behalf of shelter animals
  3. Create a Shelter Wish List and collect donations throughout the season.
