Kwanzaa for Kids Celebration

shutterstock_22555165The seven days from December 26 to January 1, is celebrated as Kwanzaa by the African-American community to celebrate both their heritage and shared community values.  Each day a principle is upheld and celebrated.  These seven principles include: Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith.  Clearly, these are universal values that all children can learn from during the holiday season.

Each day discuss the principle and what it means for your family and children.  You can also have some fun with the celebration by doing activities that embrace these principles, i.e. write a story about being determined, make a poster that shows ways of being responsible in your neighborhood, feed the homeless one day, set up a small business to earn money, e.g. sell hot chocolate!  Each day a new activity can be done to embrace the principles.  The kids can even determine their own activities after you have discussed the principle.

Alternative Themes for Holiday Birthdays

Although my birthday falls in the middle of summer, I always felt bad for my friends born around the big holiday season. We all know these are the kids who generally have to either have a holiday birthday party, or just sort of get “overlooked” with all of the holiday shuffle. Their birthday gifts mingle with the Christmas ones, and there really is no unique birthday celebration.

Recently, a friend related to me that her mother always insisted on having her December birthday party be the annual Christmas party. She longed for a summer birthday party, and even ended up donning a sundress one year for the annual birthday/Christmas party. Her mother was completely appalled, but it says something about those kids having parties in December. They would really like to have their own celebration that is detached from the holiday business. Even if it isn’t possible each and every year…it is good to shake things up a bit and throw a unique party in December. As much as the birthday kid will appreciate it, the guests will enjoy as well.

Frosty the Snowman Party Theme

Your baby is about to turn one in the middle of these cold, wintry days!  Never fear, there are some darling themes you can choose from that match the season perfectly.  One of them is the quintessential snowman.  If you live in a snowy area this may particularly appeal to you, especially the story of Frosty the Snowman, who, when he comes to life, exclaims each time, “Happy Birthday!”

Send a snowman invitation.  This can be very simple to put together using white construction paper, and decorating with the traditional black coal eyes, buttons for the body, corn cob pipe, a carrot for the nose.  You can use different colors of papers/markers for the invitation, or actually use buttons for the body and eyes, cotton balls for the body, etc.  On the reverse side, list out the party details.

Xmas is coming…the goose is getting…

OK, even I am stunned that I am beginning to think about Christmas already, but the question has been posed “What are some themes that would go along well for a small child’s party in December and be in the holiday spirit?”

When I think of kids’ party themes in December, I immediately think of my favorite Xmas TV specials…often they combine classic characters and Christmas tales and can be turned into a party theme as well.
