Update: Check out the discusssions and comments at the bottom of this article.

Charlie and Lola is a darling show that is very popular in the UK and also airs on Disney in the US. The show is directed toward kids’ ages 3 to 6 years old, and focuses on the two siblings, Charlie, the older brother who is 7, and Lola, the younger sister who is about to turn 5. Through their interactions between themselves and then with their best friends, imaginary friend, and dog, little kids can relate to how Charlie and Lola handle the cares of their every day life.

If your kids like Charlie and Lola and would like to have some of these characters’ fun at their next party, here are some ideas:

Make sure to check out Charlie and Lola Party supplies to plan your party.

  • Play soccer, commonly referred to as football in the UK. Charlie and his best friend, Marv, love to play!
  • Make strawberry milkshakes…Lola’s favorite!
  • Lola also enjoys eating a bit of “cloud” now and then…make up some whipped marshmallow dipped in white chocolate.
  • All types of crafts can be done at this party, including making rockets like Charlie and Marv love to make. Celebrate Express also has a fun Charlie and Lola activity book.
  • Enjoy a “Car Race” relay. Charlie loves to race.
  • Lola has her make believe friend, Soren, who she confides everything in when she is alone. Have the kids make up a cast of make-believe characters and create an adventure for them to undertake, i.e. a hike, a scavenger hunt, a play, etc.
  • Play Outer Space Music…just like Charlie and Marv enjoy!
  • Have the Charlie and Lola DVD playing in the background.
  • Lola’s favorite book is “Beetles, Bugs & Butterflies” ~ read books on these creatures to the kids…have them make pictures of them…have them search for little critters in the backyard. You could also decorate the party room with them.  Or as an alternative, read a Charlie and Lola (there are several) book for storytime.
  • Purchase darling Party favor boxes to send off with your guests.

Lola and Charlie are all about making up adventures with their friends and each other. They love to play and make fun and laugh and enjoy life. Whatever adventure you create for your kids and their friends at this special party, make sure there are plenty of giggles!

Say It!

  1. I’m going to have a Charlie and Lola party for my 4 year old boy in early February 2007. I live in the U.S. and at this point I cannot obtain Charlie and Lola merchandise other than books & dvds, although I found a “Happy Birthday!” gift card at Whole Foods Market. I am a bit of an artist – find me on my website that I think will post with this – and I can send you the artwork I created.

I made invitations by printing out the picture of them from PlayhouseDisney’s website – and I watercolored it. I scanned it in & reduced it in size and made a Word file with the invitation on it. I will do this sort of thing also for the thank you notes.

I am going to use pink construction paper to make a stair case on my staircase wall.

I plan to use huge artists paper (watercolor or newsprint) and draw the characters in lifesize form – and hang them on the wall (unless I can convince my husband to let me paint them on the wall) in the basement and then take photos of the kids standing next to Charlie, Lola, Marv, Lotta, Soren Laurenson, and Skizzles the dog.

I have a Xyron sticker maker and plan to make stickers of the characters that will say something like “I will never not ever eat a tomato” or “this is the most excellentest birthday party ever” or some other silly things.

I plan to have a big cardboard box in the play room where a lot of the kids will go – that will say “Lola’s musical instruments” and put in there a potato, a small toy xylophone, a slide whistle, a water bottle filled with rice, a tambourine, a collander…

I am going to have balloons filled with helium (I purchased a tank a while back for a birthday party and have used it for every party I’ve thrown ever since! It said it only fills 30 or so balloons, but I’ve filled more than that!) … the red ones will have “I will never not ever eat a tomato!” on them. The other colors will have other funny things that Lola says.

I am going to paint a canvass or big paper and just have Charlie and Lola on various walls of my house looking at the party guests, etc.

I bake really huge cakes, and I’m going to make a cake with the characters on it – and have them saying, “Happy Birthday Ian” in a balloon. I may even draw on the cake Lola holding a small birthday cake which has the 4 candles on it. I think that would be uber-cute.

To serve with the cake, I’m going to buy paper plates and napkins in Charlie and Lola colors – red, pink, light blue, dark blue, yellow… and plastic forks, etc. I’m going to serve pink milk. (I am debating about adding food coloring in red vs. adding Hershey’s strawberry syrup to the milk to make it pink.)

I will use the things I can print off Playhouse Disney’s website (the maze, Dress up Lola pictures…) for the kids to color in or do as an activity. And I will make some of those smaller so they can color it & glue it on their lunch bag – favor bags. To identify which favor bags belong to who.

I am going to make those cute little butterflies out of paper and wrapping paper – and tape them up around the house. (Two triangles make the butterflies – they are all over in the opening scene if you want to know what I’m talking about.)

I am thinking that I can put on the basement wall “Welcome to Lola-land.” And maybe drape some fabric over the furniture to make it look more like a play land than a basement or toy room.

    Party favors for gift bag:
    – curly straws
    – seed packets
    – stickers (that I make with the Xyron sticker maker I’ve never even opened — time to use it!)
    – I am thinking of having pencils custom ordered with something on them like “Snow is absolutely my favorite” or something like that.

I’m on a very tight budget so I am doing most of this with things I already have so I don’t have to spend much money. I am throwing this party for over 20 kids!

  2. One more thing that I forgot…

I have a big screen TV. I am going to play one of the DVDs on that TV. I expect that not everyone will be familiar with who is Charlie and Lola. I will have the sound muted. But hopefully they will understand the pink staircase construction paper.

Also, our computer has a big monitor and is in the center of our house – our dining room. So I’m going to play our other DVD (also muted) on the computer screen. Just for more visual ambience. (Yeah, like we need that! hahaha!)

I hope these ideas are do-able for other folks.

Charlie and Lola is a GREAT show and I’m so grateful for the BBC to put this on the air!

  3. I am so glad that someone else here in the US is a big Charlie & Lola fan. Like you, I would love to be able to throw her a Charlie & Lola party for her 5th birthday in April but I am having a terrible time finding any party favors. Unfortantly I am not an artist, but I am going to see what I can do. Thank you for the great ideas.

Agreed! Charlie and Lola is a wonderful show and I think I enjoy watching it as much as my daughter. I love the way these siblings love each other and how Charlie is always looking out for his little sister, Lola.

Best wishes and good luck! Happy Birthday to your 4 year old son!

  4. I also live in the US and am throwing my daughter a Charlie and Lola party in early February! I found all kinds of merchandise on ebay and bought a whole bundle of Charlie and Lola decorations ( I’m not nearly as artistic as Jodi but she did give me some great ideas!) I also printed off pictures from Playhouse Disney and I plan on having a buffet table of the things they talk about on the show often, like fish sticks with a sign attached that says “they’re ocean nibbles” and peas with a sign that says “they’re not peas, they are green drops from Greenland”…you get the idea. I am also planning on playing the DVD during the party and we’re going to have party games like the ones Charlie and Lola play, such as musical statues and the egg and spoon race (Target is selling that right now, the spoons are big plastic ones and the “eggs” are plastic and if dropped break open to reveal a stuffed egg, perfect for 4 and 5 year olds). We are painting bees and ladybugs as a craft along with coloring the pages I printed off Playhouse Disney. I bought a lot of “friendly” wooden bugs from Michael’s and plan on using them to decorate. Jodi, I would be SO willing to pay you to make me some of the big Charlie and Lola pictures!!

  5. I posted some pix of the birthday party on my blog! I’m posting more up there today. Feel free to e-mail me from my blog for any Charlie & Lola tips. :) I had the kids decorate their own cupcakes. I did custom order the pencils from Oriental Trading Company – and had them say “I completely must do coloring.” My husband thought that was the coolest thing ever! I also wrote on different colored balloons, “Snow is my favorite and my best” and “I will never not ever eat a tomato” and “The sun has got his hat on… hip hip hip hip hurray” etc. Fun!! I served pink milk in little cups and also sprite flavored with grenadine (cherry juice) “Shirley Temples” for the kids.

I’ve made stuffed felt figures the birds and ladybirds rockets etc. We’re hiring a church hall so I’ll hang them as decoration. I’ve also got some nice material and think I’ll make a garland of lolas wearing different dresses. It’s in June so I’ve got plenty of time (Ithink!!)

  11. I did a C&L party last year for my 4 y/o daughter, and she wants another one this year! Last year I ordered all the items from the UK, not too expensive, and completely exclusive! This year, there are things available at BirthdayExpress.com. For last year’s party I made invites that said, Birthdays Are My Favorite and My Best, with illustrations from CBeebies. I downloaded activities from the Pinkmilk website – we made mobiles and had mini coloring books that I put together. My girly doesn’t like cake/cupcakes, so I made flower rice crisp cookies on a stick in the shape of flowers – a huge hit! We also served strawberry shakes, that not many liked! Email me if you want to see photos! soulmait@comcast.net

  12. Thank you for all the direction. The bbc website has so much more to offer than the playhouse disney website. I had already found all my party supplies at celebrate express including a really cute C&L pinata, however I needed other C&L activities to do with the girls and found great ideas on the bbc website. Thanks!

  13. Charlie and Lola party goods now available in the US! I got some at http://www.celebrateexpress.com I am having a Charlie and Lola cake made by going to a local bakery and having them use the picture printing technology to scan a picture from the book. Charlie and Lola stamps are now available in the US as well. They can be used for crafts or if you use food coloring on them you can stamp cupcakes. Just a few ideas that worked for us.

  16. I would love to duplicate Charlie’s “monster birthday” for my sons 2nd b-day in April but its so hard to find ‘boyish’ looking Charlie and Lola stuff. I love the idea of cutting and pasting to make the invitations, I wish I could find the card Charlies grandparents sent him, “Have a Happy Birthday before I gobble you up!” would make a great theme for the party!
Jodi, please post your web address!
