Some General Tips on Hiring Your Entertainer:
Hire your entertainer as early as possible. Entertainer calendars book up quickly, especially around holidays and the summer months. The earlier you know who you want to hire, the better. Book in early to secure your entertainment.
Entertainers are listed in the yellow pages. Also, Peppers and Pollywogs lists entertainers in several major metropolitan areas.
Ask if there is a contract you need to sign and a deposit that needs to be paid. Make sure to fill this information in and pay in a timely manner to have your party’s entertainment all set.
Know what you are signing. Read over the paperwork carefully and make sure that you undertstand what happens if your entertainer cannot attend your event.
Reconfirm your event with the entertainer a few days before the event. Specifically, go over the exact time the entertainer will arrive and the “flow” of the event. As an example, if you will have the kids playing an outdoors game when the “clown” arrives, you may ask him to help round up the kids for the show…this is very different if you plan on having the kids already in a group seated and ready to be.
Discuss your expectations and really understand what is going to take place during the entertainer’s performance. This way both of you will have a good understanding as to what will take place.
Enjoy the entertainment at your party! Having decided the type of entertainer, done your homework, and, finally, working through these helpful tips, will help to ensure you and your kid will have loads of FUN!
Make sure you have your camera/video cam on hand to record it all!

All is excellent advice! As a children’s event planner I also suggest informing the entertainer of party details such as having mixed gender parties (some entertainers bring gender specific items) allergies, physical limitiations and additional party entertainment (such as bounce houses and other entertainment) so that both you and your entertainer can create a well informed party flow agenda!
