Feature: Nan Brotherton Photography

How often does it happen that you are having a fabulous party for your kid, and yet barely caught any of the memories because you were too busy keeping the party running smoothly to take the all-important pictures. Recently, I had the chance to discuss with Nan what she has to offer, in particular for kids’ parties.

What is your photography specialty?

Lifestyle portraiture, capturing kids doing what they do. Natural and unobtrusive style is carried into doing weddings and family pictures (can be traditional or more un-posed and candid).

Why are you interested in kids’ parties?

I always loved kids’ birthday parties…when I was little, my cousin and I would donate our services as “birthday party helpers” to our grade school auction. We would organize games, bring party favors…even dressed up as clowns.

I have experience photographing family gatherings, baptisms, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, it seems a natural extension of my work to extend to birthday parties.

Currently, I also work with preschools, actual portraits as well as daily activities, which is quite similar to birthday parties in that I am capturing the kids as the day unfolds simply doing what they do.

Finally, I have a sister who has two little girls and so I am gaining a quick understanding of birthday parties today and I am excited to become involved!

How do you work with your clients?

I am very interested in getting to know the families, making sure there is a good “chemistry” between us. As a result, I always set-up a consultation with potential clients in order for both parties to decide if we are a good fit for one another.

I explain to clients that:

1. Photos can be in color, black & white or sepia-toned (gold/brown).
2. Clients can keep the “digital negatives” by receiving a cd of high quality images from the event.
3. I can customize packages to fit clients’ photographic needs.

What is most important to me is to be able to capture the moments in life that pass by too quickly…which is often the case with birthday parties!

What a great sentiment. Kids’ parties do pass quickly, in a blink really. Nan is an excellent resource for a busy parent to capture all of those magical memories during the party and beyond!
