Gift ExchangeA Gift Exchange is another alternative to bringing presents for the birthday child. On your invitation, ask people to bring a small gift under the price of “X” amount of dollars to be exchanged at the party with the other guests.

You can have the exchange be something very simple as placing the presents into a big “grab bag” for the kids to each pick one at the end of the party on their way on out.

You could also set it up that the presents are the “prizes” that the kids receive during the different games or activities.

Gift Exchange Games

You could have the kids sit in a circle and pass all of the packages to music and when the music stops the kids unwrap the present that is in their hands. You will have to make sure no one is holding the same present that they brought to the party. If they are, then exchange the present with another kid, or play the music again and keep passing.

The kids could all pick a number, and the first person with the number “one” can pick a present from the gift bag, open it, etc. When the second person’s chance comes around, they can either “steal” another present that has already been opened and that they want or they can pick a new gift out of the gift bag. (This game is probably best played with older kids who will grasp the concept well and appreciate the spirit of the game.)

These are just a few thoughts on how a gift exchange could work at your next party. So, instead of the birthday kid collecting a big pile of gifts, they invite all of their friends to share in their celebration by receiving gifts as well.
