I saw the Golden Compass over the weekend and thought it was magical and fantastical. Little Lyra holds the key to reading the future of the world by having the power to see the truth behind the veil of what is on the surface. The movie is called the Golden Compass, and in the movie Lyra’s compass is called the Alethiometer. This looks to be a highly popular tale not just for this holiday season, but for the next two given this movie is a part of a trilogy.
If you use your imagination, you could host a party based on the movie or incorporate some ideas from the movie into activities that the kids will love to do while on holiday break or casual get-togethers.
Here are some ideas:
- Have the kids make their own Alethiometers using golden colored paper, cutting out symbols and hands that move across their own compasses. Let them think outside of the box as far as the symbols they would like to create.
- Give the kids their very own compass and have a lesson in how to use one.
- Take a nature hike and have the kids use their compass to help scout out the way.
- In Lyra’s world, each person’s soul is represented by a Daemon that is with them at all times and inseparable from their person. Ask the kids who their Daemon would be if they each had one? Have them draw a picture and provide verbs to describe their Daemons.
- Lorek is Lyra’s Polar Bear protector and displays great strength and courage to help Lyra find her way. He also battles his own past troubles among his community. Polar Bears are marvelous animals. Enjoy some activities that revolve around them.
Also, be on the lookout for a line of Golden Compass toys too. Perhaps your kid can have her very own Alethiometer as well!
