Although still summer, the air feels a bit more Autumnal to me…and with that the thoughts of the great Autumn parties to come this year.

Surely, Harry Potter will be a popular party theme for those birthdays falling in this season and even, perhaps, to help celebrate Halloween.

With that, let’s take a look at the very first piece of a fabulous Harry Potter party… the Potter Invitations. Here are some ideas for this special invitation:

  • Provide the party details on a thin sheet of a paper and burn the edges of the paper.  Roll up into a thin scroll, tie with a ribbon, and hand-deliver the invitations to your guests.
  • Send a Hogwarts School acceptance letter to the guests, accepting them into the school, i.e. the party.
  • Send the invitation in the shape of the infamous owl, wizardy hat, or magic wand.
  • Make Wizard Maps to the party.  Write party details in Hogwarts’-speak, inviting them to the Hogwarts School and drawing a magic map to the School, i.e. your home, using invisible pens.  Either hand-deliver the invitations with a magic pen or mail in a tube with the pen to the Muggle guests.
  • Make your own “Daily Prophet” Newsletter to your Muggle guests and have the feature story be your kids’ birthday partty with all of the details.

Some points to remember in crafting these invitations:

  1. Use Harry Potter language throughout…write Hogwarts School, Muggles, etc. as a means to get the kids into the party mood.
  2. Ask the kids to come dressed as their favorite Harry Potter character.  Very fun.
  3. If you are going to have a Quidditch Match or Training Session, you may want the kids to bring their own broom as well.
  4. Parchment is an excellent paper choice.
  5. If you hand-deliver these invitations to the kids’ homes, you may want to give them to the kids’ parents and ask them to place them on the kids’ beds, similar to the movie.
