Hip Hop Kids Party School-aged kids (7 and older) may love to dance, and not just any type of dance, but Hip Hop may be what they are really into. With hip hop being part of the American culture, your kid may very well ask for a hip hop birthday party.

How to pull off a Hip Hop Party:

If you are interested in holding your party at an outside venue, say a dance studio, and hiring a instructor, this is an excellent no stress-party plan — especially since it won’t require much further planning on your part.  If this is out of your budget, never fear, this can still be an easy do-it-yourself party, using the following tips:

On the invitation, invite the kids to bring their favorite hip hop songs.  One caveat to this; hip hop with its urban history and popularity with older teens and twenty-somethings often deals with subject matter that some parents may find questionably or objective.  If you want to keep this party “clean” request radio versions of songs, or if you are already aware of a song, or artist, that you feel is too old for your group of kids, state that on the invitation.  Don’t make this a focus, but certainly, if this is a party for eight year olds, the playlist will probably be different than for teenagers. If you want complete control over the songs played, then skip this step.  Get feedback from your children however, on what seems to be popular songs in their group of kids, and don’t forget to throw in a little “old skool” hip hop; Run DMZ anyone?

A hip hop dance instructor or someone who understands how to do this type of dance would be still be ideal at a do-it-yourself party (and would probably bring their own music).  Perhaps an older kid in the neighborhood, cousin, even older sibling can fill in here, if you are trying to keep costs down.  Another great idea, contact the local high school.  They often have dance groups, and kids wanting to make a few bucks.

Hip Hop Party Activites:

The majority of the party will be taken up with dancing. Make sure you have plenty of room before hand by moving furniture if necessary.  The party can simply be taken up with the entertainer teaching dance, or you could expand it to also include a dance competition after the kids have learned some moves. You may also want to have a video recorder available to tape the competition. Later on, the kids can watch the fun. This would be a great party memory for your kid, and serve as a “goody bag.”

You could play musical chairs with this party as well.  When the hip hop music stops, everyone drops.

Another activity that lends itself well to this (or any) dance party, is Memory.  Have the kids gather in a circle.  Have the birthday kid kick off the game with a hip hop dance move, and go clockwise around the circle having the next kid do the first move, then add one of their own.  Keep going until someone can’t remember all the moves.  Play two or three rounds of this for lots of laughs.

For the Hip Hop Party Menu:

Make sure to provide plenty to drink as dancing really works up a sweat.  Otherwise, the menu can be simple with food easily eaten on the go a priority.  Chips, veggies and dip, a pizza, perhaps mini burgers or chicken skewers if this is a party at home. Serve a boom box cake after the entertainment is over.

For the goodies wrist bands, head bands, and a neon notebook and pencil for the kids to use to capture their dance moves!  Celebrate Express also has hip hop bling! A great idea for a gift, or a big prize (perhaps the winner of the dance contest) would be an iTunes gift card.

If you are looking for a fun party that doesn’t require much planning, suggest a hip hop, be bop, doo wop party plan this year!

  5. I haven’t been able to find any Hip Hop Harry decorations (it’s probably not popular enough to have that type of merchandise available) but this web site had a page dedicated to a HHH theme party that has plenty of good ideas.

If you don’t have a creative bone in your body, most scrapbook/stationary/invitation stores can help you especially with the invitations and such. As for plates, cups, etc. you’ll probably just have to get the Hip Hop Harry colors (red, yellow, blue and green) Also the website hiphopharry.com has some coloring sheets you may be able to print and color. Good luck!
