It’s winter sports season … that includes hockey of course! A perfect birthday party outing this time of year is to take the kids to a hockey game, or open ice rink where they can play a game of hockey. This party will be loads of fun and easy to plan, and it will have the kids active and energetic throughout.
Looking for inspiration? Check out these ideas:
For the Invitation:
Take a straw and bend the top end out so that it looks like a hockey stick. Take your team’s favorite colors and cut out pieces of card stock. Write your party details on the inside of the card, punch a hole in one end, and attach it to the straw with a ribbon. You can hand-deliver these to your guests.
For the Decorations:
Hang posters of famous hockey players and hockey team pennants on the walls. Check out this link for thematic party decorations.
For the Activities:
If meeting before the game, hand out favorite team T-shirts, and have Sharpie markers on hand. Everyone can take turns signing each others’ T-shirt, and then they can wear them to the game. This also serves as a great party favor!
Cut out small letters of your favorite hockey team(s), and put them into balloons. Divide the group into two teams. Both teams must pop all of the balloons and decipher the hockey team’s name from the letters they get in their balloons. The first team to name the favorite hockey team wins!
For the Menu:
Serve hamburger pucks and hockey-stick breadsticks. Before baking breadsticks, bend them at one end to imitate the curve of a hockey stick. Wrap thin strips of cheese around the straight end to make a “handle.” (Slices of Velveeta or swiss work best.) Serve fruit-in-a-puck (a fruit cup). Also, Gatorade would be an excellent drink for this party.
Make a hockey puck cake! Bake a 9″ round layer cake. When completely cool, frost the cake with dark chocolate icing. Add a circle of white icing to the center of the cake, and use frosting to decorate the circle with the logo of your favorite team. You could also draw the NHL Shield logo with black and yellow gels.
For the Party Favors:
How about a favorite team“>hockey team pennant or favorite team’s bumper sticker for a party favor? Other ideas include water bottles, King Dongs (i.e. Hostess round cakes that look like hockey pucks), hockey trading cards, and mouth guards

Last year I had a hockey party for my son that started with a game at an outdoor rink. When we returned from the rink about an hour later than I thought we would (that’s how much they enjoyed it!) I kept them occupied while making lunch for them by having them sit to watch one of those Don Cherry Hockey Bloopers DVD’s. It worked out perfect!
This year he wants to do the same again, one of his friends has allergies to nuts and eggs and can’t usually eat the cake but this year I’m going to make a giant rice crispie square shaped like a puck (9″ round pan) and pour melted chocolate over it and top with a hockey figure!
