This year my son turns three, and we aren’t having a party for him. How many presents should we give him?
Often, you may find that his grandparents, extended relatives, such as Aunts and Uncles, your friends, etc. will end up each giving a gift to your son. This will add up to a lot of presents even without throwing a party. So, keep this consideration in mind when thinking about the number of gifts he will receive from his family and your friends. I know families that don’t buy anything because this amount of gifts really adds up!
Now, if this isn’t the case for you, and the birthday presents solely come from you, then 2-4 items would be plenty. Perhaps there is an outfit you want to buy, but that won’t be exciting for him, but you can still count it as a present. Along with this, how about a toy you know he really wants, and some educational type of activity, i.e. a learning game.
Make a big deal of each gift he opens, and he will have fun. At the age of three, kids do not know the difference between 3 gifts and 10 gifts. If they attend other kids’ parties and ask why they are receiving so many presents, mention that’s what happens at parties. If you find he starts asking for a party for his next birthday…don’t be surprised!
