Bright pink, sunburst orange, electric blue … these are just some of the colors you may get splattered with if you are in India in March! The colorful festival known as Holi is THE celebration of spring’s entrance. It’s an exciting and colorful holiday for kids and families alike. People end up throwing color on you as you casually walk around, and kids especially enjoy bursting balloons full of colorful dye. This is certainly a time when you want to be wearing clothes you don’t mind getting messed up!
At Holi, the colors also combine with singing and dancing. Really, people are simply celebrating life and being happy! I love this idea, and a Holi celebration would be a fun way to celebrate spring wherever you are. If you are thinking about trying it out this year, here are some ideas to pull your own celebration together:
- Fill balloons with colored water, rather than plain water, and have a water balloon fight.
- Have kids paint each others’ faces lots of different colors.
- Take plain white T-shirts, and color them with fabric paint in splattered patterns.
- Wear brightly-colored clothes.
- Hold a dance, and let the kids have colored powders available to throw on to one another. Make sure the dance takes place outdoors, and have everyone wear clothes that they don’t mind becoming full of color. Check out this article for how to make the Holi colors safely and naturally..
- If you are looking to make some traditional Holi dishes, they will also add flavor to your colorful party.
- An important part of this celebration is to wish people well with cards. Have the kids create Holi cards by painting colorful scenes onto cards made out of construction paper. Then they can fill them with warm wishes for their families and friends.
Holi is about spring, being happy, and throwing color! Your kids will love it!
Say It!
