International Women’s Day is March 8. On this day each and every year, women around the globe celebrate unity and strength across geographic boundaries. In addition to this, the day demonstrates women’s commitment to ensuring that girls’ futures are bright, safe, and rewarding. In the U.S., the entire month of March is Women’s History Month.
If you have a daughter, International Women’s Day is an excellent time to encourage her to envision her biggest and most fabulous dreams. Also encourage her to wear purple, green, and white, the colors of International Women’s Day, and to paint or draw a picture of what she would like to be when she grows up.
This is also an great opportunity to get on the Internet and do some research about women living around the globe. What are their days comprised of? What do they eat? How do they have fun? How do their lives compare and contrast to the lives women lead in your own country? This exercise will help your kids to see that women, although living in different areas of the world, are united by commonalities.
International Women’s Day is supported and upheld by the United Nations. On March 8, teach your kids a bit about the U.N. and its role in the world, particularly why the U.N. supports and upholds a day that celebrates the achievements of women.
On March 8, take a little time to discuss the significance of the day, learn about how women live around the world, and encourage your daughter to follow her dreams.
