Music appeals to little kids…they love to dance and sing and, ultimately, learn while the music plays. Jack’s Big Music Show is a very popular show with the “Under 5″ crowd. Jack loves music and always escapes to his clubhouse with his best friend, Mary, and his dog, Mel, to make fabulous music together. A great idea for a party for this age group would be to do something musical, and Jack’s Big Music Show would be a great theme!
Invite the kids to your own “Big Music Show!” Send out an invitation that looks like Jack’s Clubhouse. Noggin has some excellent printables that you can download to use for the invitation. The Jack’s Clubhouse printable is an excellent choice. It can be used as a stage for your finger puppets and as a party invitation background. Add on a fingerpuppet who announces the big party.
For decorations, draw with sidewalk chalk different musical instruments as the kids walk to your front door. Inside the party room, have music instruments laying around, play drums will do, but so will pots and pans. You can also cut out pictures of musical instruments to decorate the party walls. Noggin has musical instrument learning cards that may be a good choice. Use light colors to match the stage colors for your balloons, streamers, and tableware. There is no need to look for Jack’s party ware, as matching the colors will be great and cost saving. If you have a real musical instrument, place it in the center of the party table and attach balloons.
Instead of using Jack in the name, use your kid’s name and have a welcome sign to _____Big Show!
When kids arrive at the party, provide them with a T-shirt with a popular iron-on for the kids to wear at the party and to take home as a goody.
While they wait for everyone to arrive, have them color in some of Jack’s printables, and play with the musical instruments around the room.
Once everyone arrives, have the kids sing-a-long to the popular songs, either by leading a round of song or by popping in some of Jack’s videos and having the kids sing to the video.
Play Freeze Dance. Play the music, and when you turn it off, the kids must freeze until it begins again.
Have the kids make up their own songs to favorite tunes, and have everyone dance together.
Every time a new party tactility is about to begin, put it to song, “It’s time to play games,” “It’s time to eat cake,” etc. It will add musical fun!
Jack’s Big Music Show also has a very good listing of activities that are recommended that you can incorporate into your party.
Other party games can include:
- Make a magical music genie for the kids to play “Hot Musical Genie” like Hot Potato.
- Play “Jack Says” like Simon Says, have him say musical movements.
- If you have placed musical instrument pictures on the walls and real instruments around the party room, have them numbered 1, 2, and 3. Have the kids find the musical instruments, turn it over, to win a prize that corresponds to a number.
- Make up a stage and have the kids take turns dancing alone or as a group on the stage.
- Watch an episode!
Serve any favorite foods that your kid loves. Find a musical cookie cutter and cut everything up to match the musical theme. FamilyFun.com has a great Xylophone Cupcake Cake. Yum!
The kids can take home their special T-shirts and a copy of the songbook as well. Jam on!
