shutterstock_3212774Life’s busy…is it appropriate to celebrate two of my kids’ birthdays on the same day and give them a joint party?

Having a joint party for two of your kids is a perfect plan, especially when you have a lot on your plate. In fact, I remember when my Mom had a third baby. That summer, my older brother, by four years, and I shared a party. This made sense with only ten days between our birthdays. A general rule of thumb is to make sure the two kids’ birthdays fall within the same month or, at most, the same season.

If you plan a joint party, consider the kids’ ages. My brother and I are different genders and had four years between us. Still, we didn’t have a professional entertainer. My parents set up different games that were appropriate for our ages and we each invited around five to seven friends. My parents were handling two mini-parties — one for the girls and one for the boys. It helped that it was within the summer months, so some of the activities took place outdoors.

A couple of thoughts regarding joint parties:

Consider the kids’ ages and gender. If you are hiring an entertainer, try to find one who is versatile and can keep multiple ages entertained.

Have two separate birthday cakes. Kids enjoy picking out their own favorite cakes, so make sure to have one for each.

Sing Happy Birthday twice!

Use different areas of your home and yard for games and activities. The two party crowds may not mix well — depending on age and gender — and, if so, make sure to have the areas coordinated for the two groups. Mom and Dad can run each of the mini-parties, but it may also be useful to have some extra help.

Joint parties are always okay, so make the suggestion to your kids. But just remember to make each feel special even as they share their special days!
