Did you watch the season premiere of Jon & Kate Plus Eight? The couple threw their sextuplets a Bouncy 5th Birthday Party that their children adored. This was the first birthday party that they had planned with their kids’ friends beinginvited to a party in the park that included giant bouncy houses, a magician with a real rabbit, pinatas, food, cake, and ice cream. A few takeaways from the party include:
1. Kate mentioned the theme was easy as the kids told her exactly what they wanted: a bouncy birthday! Excellent!
2. The party location was a party in the park which is an excellent spring party. However, when they arrived, Kate mentions how cold, dark and dreary the day was…and the location was full of bugs. On the fly, they decided to place Citronella candles on each table to help with the bugs. Kate knew that the kids would have a blast even with the cold weather, which they did!
3. This is the first time they invited kids to attend the party. To make sure all of the sextuplets friends were there they invited the entire class, including the teacher and her child too. The guests’ parents stayed at this party, as expected with this age group.
4. Kate did ( and had help) assemble (ing) the goody bags. She does question why she bothers when she knows parents don’t like them, but the goody is appreciated by the guests in any case.
5. The main decorations were set up in a park pavilionarea with tablecloths, a Happy Birthday banner, balloons, streamers. My favorite was the large #5 on the front of the pavilion. The Bouncy Houses were set up close to the party pavilion area to maintain close party proximity.
6. Kate has a group of helpers to set everything up…she needed help that was quick and fast as is often the case when setting up the party.
7. In addition to the Bouncy Houses, there was also a magician hired to entertain the kids. Jon felt his routine was more targeted to the adults than the kids but lo and behold he did have a big fat rabbit on hand that the kids went wild over! Kate was relieved that he had a real rabbit there!
8. Although there were two cakes on hand, Kate asked that they begin with one…chocolate cake with peanut butter icing. They made sure to sing Happy Birthday to each birthday child – a must at joint birthday parties!
9. The Pinatas were hung low and the kids stayed back when a child was swinging at the Pinata. Often the kids knocked the head off and Kate ended up ripping it open and sprinkling the candy all over the ground for the kids to pick up. There was much excitement over this and many kids remarked this was their favorite part.
Kate brings up an excellent point about the character pinatas. These are beloved friends of our kids, and the pinata game is literally “beating the character” which somehow doesn’t site right. V. interesting point. The pull string pinata variety may make more sense in this case.
10. When the kids were asked their favorite part of the party, they replied: real bunny, cake. pinatas, bouncy…they also said Thank You to Kate. How sweet…they loved their party!
My favorite party? A special birthday kiss for each birthday child from mom!
Say It!

I have triplets, and the one thing I do every year is to get each of my children their own birthday cake. I think it is important, because truly it is a special day for each child. The cake is decorated with specific things for each child~~princesses, spiderman, little einsteins.
I’ve just always felt strongly about individual cakes!
