La Quinceanera

For many families, la Quinceanera is a special celebration that takes place when a young woman turns 15 years old.  It is an elaborate party to mark this passage from childhood to young womanhood and is marked with plenty of celebrating. 

Common features of the event include a special mass, attended by family and godparents (padrinos), and a formal court, consisting of the young woman’s contemporaries (damas and chambelanes). Guests receive gifts (bolos), and the occasion ends with a cake, a band, and a dance.
