My daughter who is 5-years-old attended a birthday party this past weekend where the girls’ faces were completely made-up, their hair teased with glitter spray, and full manicures were given? Is this appropriate? She had a blast, but something didn’t feel right about it for the kids’ ages?
The important thing to remember is this is a birthday party. Little girls love nothing more than dressing up. In a sense, being made-up is essentially just that: dressing up and playing pretend. Do you remember getting into your Mom’s makeup drawer as a small child? Perhaps trying on the lipstick, eye shadow, and blush? So much mystery and excitement among the colors and how it makes someone look. Glamour parties for little girls are a very popular theme, and when you think about it in terms of dressing up and pretending, it has a more appropriate “feel” to the party.
Also, your daughter had a lot of fun. That’s really important. Given this was an activity for a birthday party, I don’t believe this is something she will want to do as a regular activity. Birthday parties are a time for playing make-believe, it sounds like the glamour added to the spirit of dressing up.
