For kids between the ages of 5 to 8 years old are often enchanted by the story of The Little Mermaid and mermaids in general. Are they actually under the sea? If so, what are their lives like…and wouldn’t it be fun to be a little Mermaid and find out? If your birthday kid wants to bring this fantasy to life at her next party….here are some ideas to help you plan:FamilyFun.com has a fabulous Mermaid Party Plan with some great activities and a fun Mermaid Cake!

And some other ideas you may find useful include:

Set up stations in your backyard where the kids can do different activites, such as:

  • Making shell necklaces. Using a small drill, make holes in the top of clamshells and have the kids thread them through fishing pole wire. They can wear them during the party.
  • Make Mermaid Crowns. Using blue and green colors, have the kids decorate them with markers, beads, sequins, stickers and wear during the party.
  • Face painting, where the kids can have a seahorse painted on their cheeks!
  • Fill a wading pool and place green bowls in the bottom. Have the kids enjoy a penny toss.
  • Bury treasures in a sandbox and have the kids dig them out.
  • Make Collage Sea Creatures, using pre-cut ocean shapes have the kids decorate with sequins and glitter and cut up tissue paper shapes to make a beautiful collage.

For decorations, blow up a sea of balloons for the front entrance-way to the party. Green, blue, and pearly white are all excellent choices. The kids will enjoy walking through the sea of color into the party.

An alternative to a birthday cake, is to use a sand castle mold to freeze vanilla ice cream. From there, sprinkle cinammon sugar all over to give the appearance of sand. Finish it off, by placing shell shaped candies around the base of the ice cream cake.

For goody bags, have the kids take home their crafts, and also mermaid stickers, bubbles, blue and green glitter bottles, even a little fish to take home would be fun!
