hdr_brand_miss_spiderMiss Spider is a darling show that airs on Noggin each week that is based on the books by David Kirk.  It’s a bug’s eye view of the world that teaches children how to get along with others – including family, friends, and neighbors.  If your child loves bugs and is a fan of this show and these books, a Miss Spider party may be just the theme for your favorite little one.  You can find printables and other activity ideas at Noggin, and Nickelodeon Jr. has a great Miss Spider Sunny Patch party plan too.

Create a Miss Spider Party invitation.  Cut out large black circles (for Miss Spider’s body) and attach colorful yarn strings for her legs.  Use whatever colors appeal to your birthday child.  On Miss Spider’s body, write your party details and make sure to invite them to your birthday child’s own Sunny Patch!  These can either be mailed or hand-delivered to your guests.  These are so fun, you may want to request your guests bring the invitaitons to the party to use as additional party decorations.

For your party decorations:

Use bright bold colors for your traditional party ware: yellow, green, and blue are good choices and you can mix and match with thematic party pieces.  Blow up balloons, hang streamers, and outfit your party table with this decor.

Create a sign welcoming your guests to the Sunny Patch.  Hang on your front door.

This is an excellent party to hold during spring and summer when your flowers are in full bloom.  In addition, create large and small paper tissue flowers and place all throughout the party room and also as a table centerpiece for your party.

Spider webs, small plastic critters, and butterflies would be additionally fun to hang from the ceiling and place on the party table to keep with the theme.

Create your own Hollow Tree using a large appliance box that the kids can play in during the party.

For party activities:

As the children arrive, have a face painter on hand to create bug faces on each of the kids.  Fun!

While the children wait for everyone to arrive, they can color printable pages or hang their Miss Spider invitations in the party room.  If you have made the Hallow Tree, the children can play together there.

For preschool children, a few organized activities is all you need to keep them happy.  Try these activities:

Play Miss Spider, Miss Spider…Beetle just like Duck, Duck, Goose.

Put on dance music and have the kids dance the Jitterbug with each other.  When you turn off the music, the kids must freeze in place until the music comes on again.

Play Miss Spider Says like Simon Says.

Read the books to the children and let them take turns acting out different scenes with one another using their imagination.

Hold a Critter Hunt.  Fill small cups or little bags with gummy bugs and flowers and any other buggy candies you can find, and let the kids hunt them out.  If they are pre-packages baggies, these can serve as the party favor or if in a little cup, a treat to be enjoyed during the party.

For a Miss Spider party menu:

Check out this Bug Party theme for thematic menu ideas.

How about some easy to make edible spiders -you can surely decorate these to look cute rather than scary.

As the kids depart, provide them with a thematic goody.  Colorful water bottles filled with bug juice with the Sunny Patch written directly on the containers with the guests’ names would be perfect.  Alternatively, a small jar filled with a caterpillar inside would also be fun…just make sure it’s OK with your guests’ parents too.
