So, you have your theme, you have logged onto one of the sites that is great for party “stuff,” and now found your theme with all of the trimmings…but the price tag is out of your budget for every piece to match, i.e. the napkns, plates, cups, etc. Can you do anything to cut down on these types of birthday party expenses?
Why not mix -n- match? You could buy the plates in the theme that you are planning and then you could accent this this with a primary color napkin and cup that you can pick up at the Dollar Store or Target for very little money. It will look really nice and it is prefectly fine to mix and match the items.
If you are having a pink poodle theme ~ buy the plates…then pick up pink napkins and white cups. It will look great!

This is exactly what I’ve done in preparation for our daughter’s 5th birthday party. She wanted a Care Bear theme and to buy the themed kits in the amount we needed would have been about $60 ($17ea for three 8 packs), just for plates, napkins, cups and cutlery! So instead, I bought Care Bear plates and then found larger packages of napkins, cups and colored plastic cutlery in colors that complemented the design on the plates. In the end, I paid $16 for everything. We had pink and purple streamers left over from last year’s party (we didn’t use anywhere near all of them) and I found Care Bear place mats and bought a bag of balloons at the dollar store to finish off the decorations. I’ll do a small, home-made cake for her with a $3 plastic Birthday Bear figurine as a cake topper, and then I’ll do cupcakes with gummi bears on top for the rest of the arrangement. We’re printing line art on heavy card stock and cutting them out in puzzle shapes to make “color your own” puzzles as an activity and the kids will get to take those home, along with a small box of crayons in lieu of goody bags.
