So, you have decided the type of entertainer you would like…how do you select one?
Usually, this is the time that you have to do some homework. Look at the directories on the Web and the listings in the parent magazines and draw up a list of the entertainers. Let’s say you have decided to have a clown entertain at your 4 year olds’ party. Here is a handy list of basic questions that I recommend you ask the entertainer on those initial phone calls:
- What does your “clown” routine entail?
- What do you consider your specialty?
- Which ages is your show best geared for? Ask them to distinguish why they are the best for a 4 year old party.
- What is the length of your show?
- What is the cost? Are there any extra costs, i.e. traveling fees to our home? Additional charge for more than “x” amount of children? Does the cost include anything more than just the show, they may include the cost of the balloon animals in the show or they may not.
- Do you have any references?
- Can I come by another party to see a performance? (May not be so important when you have a long list of entertainers, but when you have almost 98% decided on one, perhaps you would like to see the entertainer at another show before deciding.)
- What is the policy if the entertainer cannot make the performance? Is there a back-up entertainer on hand? How much notice do you give? What is the refund policy?Through a basic conversation, parents and others can get a very good sense of an entertainer. There are so many entertainer options out there today for your kids’ party…and they would all like to meet you and be a part of your child’s next event. Make sure to do your homework so that the entertainer you choose is a great fit with your party plans!

As a full time professional Entertainer since 1984 I agree on the above statements with the exception of entertainers inviting prospective clients to your private Event. If you were throwing a party for your child would you want a total stranger crashing your party? Do you think the entertainer you hired should be inviting strangers to your party? Would you feel on the spot if an entertainer you hired asked as a favor if they could bring a prospective client to your party? ..etc…
The reason I have a website is to post photos, references and write ups for prospective clients. Clients then can talk to me by phone get more information and get a sense of me as a Professional and as a Person.
