So, what if you really don’t want any guests to bring gifts for their birthday party? This could be for any number of reasons — your child is too young to appreciate gifts, your child has yet to go to a friend’s party and so hasn’t given any other child a birthday gift, you don’t believe in gifts at parties, etc.

Would it be appropriate to put on the invitation, “No gifts, please?”

Even if you put this on the envelope, some people will definitely still bring gifts. In order to keep with party suggestion, you could do a couple of options:

  • State on the invitation, “Gifts under $5 only please.” It allows people to buy a gift and do the traditional “presents,” but also limits their extravagance.
  • Ask guests to make a small donation to a favorite charity of your family’s during the party. This way the money they would spend on a gift would go to a charitable cause. This provides a philanthropic lesson to the birthday kid and his guests.

These are two ideas that will limit the extravagance of the gift and/or provide a great opportunity to collect money for a worthy cause. Both are good alternatves if you really don’t want gifts at the party. It is so ingrained in people to bring a gift, providing such suggestions will be very helpful.

  1. We had a book exchange in lieu of gifts and it went over really big at my 5-year-old’s party. She still gets presents from family members, and she and her friends get new books to read. I wrote on the invitations for the kids to pick a book or two from their collection that they are tired of and think another friend would like to read. Then, at the party, as the kids come in, we have a big tub for them to put the books into and at the end of the party, as they are leaving, they get to pick one or two new ones from the tub. It worked great.

  2. [...] have already chimed in my thoughts here, but it’s an ongoing issue with modern day kids’ parties. Check it out! [...]
