SmartMamaOuterSpace Kids are often fascinated with outer space, space ships, and new worlds to explore beyond our own. Is there any wonder why so many children dream of being an astronaut when they grow up? A great party theme for both boys and girls is Outer Space. It brings these new worlds right to their own front door as they celebrate their birthdays!

Find outer space inspiration with these ideas:

Send your guests a spaceship invitation. Using heavy card stock, cut out spherical shapes in different colors, and have your space cadet birthday kid decorate the front with stickers, craft items, etc. On the reverse side, write all of your party details.

Alternatively, purchase packets of Pop Rocks candies, and use a ribbon to attach a small invitation card to each packet providing all of the party details.

Use thematic space language on your invitation: “Blast off for a birthday full of out-of-this-world outer space fun!” Or, “You’ve been selected for Astronaut Training in honor of _____’s Birthday! If you accept your mission, report for duty at _____. Confirm your seat in advance by contacting Mission Control Agents.”

Birthday in a Box has Space party supplies for your decorations and tableware.

In your astronaut area, hang plastic board on the walls, and cover it with glow-in-the-dark stars.

Hang black streamers from the ceiling and place an air mattress on the floor.

When the kids arrive, provide them with space outfits. A plastic helmet and small coveralls duct-taped to fit around the kids’ legs would be fun. Add duct tape stripes on the coveralls. Also, provide them with U.S. flag pins and stickers to wear during the party.

Play Space Commander Says, just like Simon Says. Have the birthday child be the first commander in charge, and ask the kids to do things as if they are in space, such as slow moving jumps, walking, turn arounds, etc.

Create a Zero Gravity Experience. Using a swivel chair, have each guest sit and try to move it from point A to point B without touching the ground. Also, have each astronaut try to withstand a fast spin in the chair.

Hold a Moon Rock Search. Before the party, paint an assortment of rocks with glow-in-the-dark paint, and hide them. See how many the kids can find in an allotted period of time.

Have a Bubble Catch. Using a bubble machine, have the kids catch as many bubbles as they can.

Let the kids go on their own Spaceship Adventure. Have the kids decorate and prep large appliance boxes for their space adventure. Have plenty of craft materials available for the kids to decorate with. When the space craft is ready, dim the lights and count down to blast off.  Have the kids use old remote controls, walkie talkies, etc., to communicate with one another.  Lay out the stops the kids will be making, and at each one, have a Space Trivia game about the solar system and the different planets.

When the kids reach the Moon, have them get out and do a moon walk on the air mattress.

For Jupiter, have a sea of golden balloons in another area of the party, and let the kids romp through them without breaking any for Jupiter’s surface.

When the kids reach Saturn, they must hula hoop to mimic Saturn’s rings.

Serve an Outer Space menu. Have the kids make their own meal just like real astronauts would have to:

Make mini pizzas with English muffins, and have the kids prepare them with an assortment of toppings, such as sausage, cheese, olives, etc.

Provide plastic bags, pudding mix, and milk. Combine the two ingredients in the plastic bag and shake it up! While the kids eat their pizzas, place the pudding bags into the refrigerator. When it is time to eat the pudding, cut a small hole at the bottom and let them eat it as astronauts would.

Serve freeze dried snacks.

Don’t forget a yummy batch of Outer Space cupcakes.
