shutterstock_9650584 (2)This Halloween season you may find your kids wanting to take a step back into a different era and dress up as someone from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s.  What’s great about these retro Halloween costume ideas is they are budget friendly and can easily be created from what you may already have at home or find in a thrift store.  Perhaps your child and her friends can enjoy an afternoon outing to thrift stores to pull their retro costumes together with each other.  Fun!

DIY 1950’s Costume:

Think Happy Days!  The girls can dress up in large poofy skirts (preferably a poodle skirt), colorful blouses, chiffon scarves around their necks, hair in ponytails, red lips … and you are set!

For the boys: jeans, white T’s, leather jackets, combs in the back pocket, slicked-back hair.

How easy are these costumes to put together?

DIY 1960’s Costume:

Think Woodstock!  Flower power!  For the girls, mini skirts, bright tights, platform shoes, flower shirts, long hair, and no makeup would place you in this decade in no time at all.

For the boys, bell bottoms, sandals, flowing shirts, and long hair would be the perfect get-up!

Don’t forget peace sign buttons, pendants, and signs to complete your outfit.

DIY 1970’s Costume:

Think disco! It’s a night on the town rocking to the Bee Gees.  Both boys and girls can dress up in boots, colorful slacks (for the girls: wild patterned mini skirts), and patterned button-down shirts or neon blouses for the girls. Do up the hair with mousse and hairspray, and make sure to try out those dance moves before you head out for the night!

DIY 1980’s Costume:

Think Thriller!  Think neon! Think punk!

For the girls, paint your nails neon colors and streak your hair neon too, and then tease it into some big hair. Wear bright colors, leg warmers, bright tops (one side worn off the shoulder), bubble gum, and don’t forget to talk like a Valley Girl…  like, like, OK?

For the guys, think about Michael Jackson.  Mix and match white and black for the slacks and top and make sure to add a thin red tie.  Add the MJ white glove, and make sure to do the Moon Walk as you trick or treat.  You can add a headband too.

If retro is the way your child wants to go this Halloween season, it’s a great idea! Budget-friendly and easy to put together, these retro Halloween costume ideas will transport your kids in time! Have fun!
