It is surprising today, but when you send out invitations today ~ and they could be the most beautifully crafty and creative invites or standard store-bought ones ~ it is no matter, you can almost guarantee that many people will not RSVP to your event.  Even as I was getting married several years go, and had sent out formal invitations with stamped reply envelopes, I still found many did not RSVP to the event.

I don’t necessarily believe this has to do with people being rude, as more a matter of having a million and one things to do and that to RSVP to an event takes actually noting that some real mail, that is not a bill, has been delivered and requires a response.  This can be lost on people.

I recently had someone relate that they sent their kid’s party invitation home with the kids with all of the rest of their school memos and flyers.  She had received very few RSVPs and the RSVP deadline was almost upon her.  What to do?

Well, I would let the RSVP date roll round before doing anything.  It would be a good idea to determine the RSVP date around the consideration that you may have to contact some guests to get a response.  This allows you not to come down to the wire with your planning process.

Once the RSVP deadline has passed, take note of who you have not heard a response from and contact them.  In this case, a phone call is preferable to e-mail, as some people will not check their e-mail and this will keep you in the same bind.  Call and ask what their response is.  Most of the times, people will be offering an apology to you along the lines of feeling sorry for not having gotten back with you.  Or, if you call, and they had never received the invitation, that is your way to know that something went missing.  Either way, you will be able to know your numbers, which is a high priority when planning a party.

If you have had to invite your child’s whole class due to a school regulation and you do not have the contact information for everyone you invited, if you contact your child’s teacher and explain the situation, she should be able to provide you with this information quickly.

I guess it is an important reminder to all of us to take note of what’s in our mailbox and what is coming home from school and act on responses quickly….otherwise they may get away from us!
