If this is a birthday for a friend of your kid’s, then definitely still give the gift, but you can either drop it at a convenient time for you or have your kid take it to school and give it to him if they are in the same class.

If this is a birthday party for someone that your kid is not particularly close to and perhaps was just invited because that is the school rule, i.e. the whole class must be invited, then it would be appropriate to not necessarily give a gift unless your kid actually attends the party. In this case, you could hang on to the gift for the next party.

Birthday gifts at parties are brought by kids who are attending the actual party. The kids get to have fun and the birthday kid gets gifts from his guests. If your kid doesn’t attend the party, because he is sick of for any other reason, there is no need to give a gift. Only if this is a party for a close friend or relative, then you will want to make arrangements to still deliver the gift.
