j0422320 I am hosting two first birthday parties for my daughter; one with family at home and one with friends at a park. Should I have a smash cake at both parties, or skip it at the park?

Smash Cake is the precious tradition of baking your one-year-old birthday child her very own cake that she can do whatever she likes with…mainly it makes for a great photo that will be treasured for years to come.  Often people make two cakes on the first birthday occasion…one to share with friends and family that looks beautiful and may match the party theme and a second one with the birthday child’s name on it that is meant to be destroyed by her.

Given you are having two separate parties, choose one party to do the Smash Cake tradition!  Often this is done with the family and may be your best choice given it will be more difficult to carry out the tradition at a park with older kids attending.  At home, you can have it alongside the regular cake and can easily be done and cleaned up afterwards.

There is not right or wrong decision, but to make it easiest on you, one Smash Cake tradition at your family party would be best!

Any cake will do for the Smash Cake!  Given it will be smashed and splattered, why not make up your favorite box cake, frost, and pipe your child’s name on it with icing and serve!  Simple and easy.
