Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a classic Disney tale that kids are sure to love.  This fall Disney is bringing the classic movie out of its vault and it will be available on DVD for your children to watch again and again.  It is a timeless tale.   If your children are between the ages of 3 and 7,  this movie is also a great birthday party theme! Although Snow White runs along the idea of a “Princess” theme, the dwarfs in the story make it very boy-friendly as well. This is a great theme for both boys and girls to have fun with!

For the Invitations: Hand-deliver bright, shiny red apples with party details written on an attached tag. Certainly you could use the language from the story, “Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to a party we go!” You could request that the kids come dressed as one of the Seven Dwarfs too, especially if they are boys, and as Snow White if they are girls.

Check out this Snow White costume, a very popular choice for the Halloween season and for your party.

For the Decorations: Use the colors of Snow White’s dress for the color scheme: red, bright yellow, and blue. Use these colors for the balloons, streamers, and the tableware. In the center of the party table, have a bowl of bright red apples. To make a tree like the one in the story, take two large appliance boxes and stack them on top of each other. Cover the “trunk” with brown butcher paper, crunching each piece for texture. Connect branches made out of the same material to the trunk.

For additional fun, Mom could dress up as the queen who looks like a witch, and Dad could be the prince.

For Activities:

  1. Upon arrival, have the kids look into a “magic mirror” and ask, “Who is the fairest of them all?”
  2. The first craft can be making magic mirrors. Purchase small hand-held mirrors, along with pom poms, sequins, and plastic jewels that the kids can glue on to the mirrors. They can take this craft home as a goody.
  3. Print off Snow White pictures for the kids to color as everyone is finishing up with their magic mirrors.
  4. Read the story of Snow White to the kids. You may want to play music from the movie in the background of the party as well.
  5. Play Charades with the Seven Dwarfs. Give each of the kids a dwarf name: Happy, Dopey, Sleepy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Bashful, or Doc. Hand out beards for the kids to put on when they are doing the charades.
  6. Play Hot Apple, like Hot Potato.
  7. Play Doc Says, like Simon Says
  8. Make a Magic Potion in the Evil Queen’s cauldron. Use water, baking soda, and vinegar to pull this one off. Pour the vinegar and baking soda into the water and watch it bubble up as the kids say the magic words, “Happy Birthday!”
  9. Have a Jewel Mining Hunt. Hide Ring Pops and plastic jewels in sand, dirt, or sawdust, and give the kids pails to dig with, just like the dwarfs.
  10. The birthday kid can act out the famous scene where the witch gives Snow White the poisoned apple. The kid takes a bite, faints, and the prince must give her a kiss to wake her up. This would work especially well if Mom and Dad are dressed in costume, and the kid wants to act it out. Other guests can as well.
  11. Play Dwarf Bowling. Set up a series of party hats that the kids must knock over by rolling a small ball.

For the Menu: Serve all things apple. Cut small sandwiches into apple shapes and fill them with cream cheese and apple butter. Also serve applesauce and sliced apples with a variety of dips: chocolate, peanut butter, marshmallow cream, and strawberry yogurt. Candied apples, Rice Krispie treats that look like apples using red food coloring, and apple fruit salad would be fun at this party as well. Serve apple juice too.

If you are serving a full meal, make dwarf fare with hot dogs and hush puppies, but make everything miniature.

Make a chocolate cake using cake as dark as ebony, frosting as white as snow, and sprinkles red as a rose. Don’t forget to sing, “Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off for cake we go!”

For the Favors: Find white fabric bags and tie them with a bright red ribbon. Inside, place Snow White stickers, the guests’ magic mirrors, apple candies, ring pops, jewelry candy, fake jewels, red lip gloss, fake beards, whistles, etc.

Say It!
