I often think that clowns, magicians, characters are just a bit too over the top for a first birthday party. I was recently talking to a few entertainers, one of whom was a clown and she said she gets a lot of one year old parties because older children are invited and she is meant to entertain them. If you have a bunch of older children attending your party, then I think it makes sense…but you should be careful to keep the entertainer from the birthday baby…these entertainers can often appear scary to the baby.
At the same time, I spoke with another entertainer that has a whole interactive music program that is beautifully done with a well-rested birthday baby…Especially when Mom and Dad engage with their birthday baby and the musical program. One-year olds love music…if you are interested in an entertainment choice that your one year old will enjoy, think in terms of music. It sounds appropriate and very special to me.
Outside of that idea, there are many other ideas that are also appropriate for the first birthday party. Here is a list of a few of my favorites:
Mommy and Baby Tea Party – Invite a few special friends to celebrate your baby’s 1st birthday with a traditional tea party.
Take me to the Zoo – You can either go to the Zoo with some special family friends or set the stage at home with stuffed animals, posters and solid colored party products. Make masks with paper plates, play animal charades.
Mother Goose Party- Have your guests dress-up as their favorite Nursery Rhyme character. Hang drawings or posters of Mother Goose Characters. Decorate a sheet cake to look like an open book.
No matter what you decide, I know it will be memorable and special for all of you!
Say It!
