shutterstock_9568966Rather than letting your teens loose on Halloween — it’s a Saturday this year! — throw them a party instead. Whether it’s at home, school or a local bowling alley, a Halloween party is a great way to keep them safe. Here are a few party ideas from Celebrations’ Lauren DeBellis.

Heaven & Hell Teen Halloween Party

Great for creative teens who love getting dressed up, a Heaven-and-Hell theme party will get their creative juices flowing.

Costumes:
Split the guest list in half and assign one group to dress up in “Heaven” inspired costumes (angels, cherubs), while the other half dresses up in “Hell” inspired costumes (vampires, devils).

For inspiration and accessories, check out sites like Buycostumes.com and WindyCityNovelties.com.

Decorations:
Split your party room in half, decorating one side as Heaven (think all white, silver, and pale blue) and the other side as Hell (red, orange, black).

Solid-colored balloons, holiday lights and store-bought feather boas are easy ways to decorate a space inexpensively and creatively.

Food:
If you’re providing your guests with dinner, opt for something simple that can be bought in bulk for a reasonable price such as pizza.

Think about ordering a “white” pizza (this is a sauce-free pizza usually covered in mozzarella and ricotta cheeses) and another pizza topped with red sauce and black olives,.

Treats:
Set up two table sections: one for heavenly treats and one for devilish goodies.

For heavenly treats, stick with light, fluffy treats such as angel food cake, coconut topped cupcakes, vanilla meringues, white jelly beans, white chocolate covered pretzels and white cheddar popcorn.

For devilish goodies, think decadent and rich delights such as red velvet cupcakes with chocolate (instead of cream cheese) frosting, double chocolate brownies, red hot candies and cinnamon popcorn from The Popcorn Factory.

Classic Monster Mash for Teens

Teens with a flair for the dramatic can get creative and re-create some of the most beloved or feared monsters from classic movies.

Costumes:
This could work best with a smaller group of guests.  Assign each guest a classic monster to arrive dressed as. We suggest Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolf Man, Mummy, etc.

Prepare a name tag for each “monster” to wear. Create it yourself using labels that can be printed right on your computer.

Activities:
For a fun twist, play out a murder mystery similar to the classic board game Clue.  Assign someone to play a “murder victim” and then stage an investigation.  Have an adult play the detective and prepare clues for the guests to follow.

Classic games such as bobbing for apples is always a hit. And be sure to set aside time for dancing!

Food:
Play up the “monster theme” and offer guests goodies such as mummy dogs, deviled chicken lollipops, deviled eggs and witch finger cookies.

Decorations:
Set up your party space to resemble a spooky laboratory. Dimmed lights are a must as well as lots of faux spider webs.

Also, pick up items such as faux body parts, skulls, black crows and other spooky accessories from your local craft or party store.
