So, your pre-teen and/or teen wants to revisit those groovy 60s days for their next party. I am sure parents, even the Gen Xers who also enjoyed wearing tie dyed t-shirts and taking road trips in VW vans as their own taste of that retro-time period, will be able to come up with some fun ideas to help their kid groove to this theme.
Of course, my parents actually lived through the 60s and seemed to have no idea that all of the “fun” that was going on around them. We used to ask, “How was Woodstock?” and the common response was “Snoopy just wasn’t that popular back then!” Ok, go figure. Even growing up in that context, I have a few ideas for you:
- For decorations, put up peace signs, smiley faces, yin-yang signs all over the party area. Hang beads in the doorways. Have incense burning. Use a Lava lamp if you have one around the house.
- Tie Dye Headbands ~ you can do this either before the party to hand out or as a party activity.
- Hand out “Love Beads” to the kids as they arrive.
- In your invitation, have the kids dress in 60s attire.
- Definitely have the kids tie dye t-shirts at the party.
- Play Twister.
- Have a 60s Trivia Contest
- Put on some groovy music and dance, dance, dance!
- Make a large round cake and decorate either as a Peace Symbol or a Smiley Face.
You don’t really need to send too many goodies home with the kids…let them take the headbands, t-shirts, and love beads as their goodies. An additional item would be some stickers or pins with the 60s statement, such as “Flower Power.”
Say It!

[...] A 60s Party [...]
I actually do “groovy girl” parties and for their favors I make the “pet rocks” with a certificate, and include mood rings and a groovy rubik cube. I even include info in a little book that tells all about the history of the pet rocks, mood rings and groovy. I have dishes and glasses that I had painted with all the flower power colors and it says Groovy Girl on them. We do karaoke, with guitars, microphones, saxophones, play groovy bingo, pass the present and bring all the “groovy” outfits, hats and accessories for them to wear at the party. This is really a fun party!
