I recently celebrated my kid’s first birthday, and I had invited all of my friends with their kids. I served a wonderful meal to the guests, and, of course, made too much. I was busy at the party, and did not have time to be in the kitchen as people were leaving. After the party was over, and I went into my kitchen, I noticed all of the leftover food was gone and that everyone had helped themselves to it. Is this appropriate?
Most of the times, the party host will ask guests to take home leftover food, or the guests will ask. If you were busy with other parts of the party, it might have just been assumed by your friends that they are welcome to take what they wanted without asking or telling. They probably didn’t realize that you minded or wanted some for yourself.
In future, you may want to have a helper in the kitchen during this time of the party to give people leftover food that you are happy to give away, or you may want to make sure you are in the kitchen area watching over what is going on. This can be very difficult at a one-year-old’s party, but will get easier in future years, especially when your only guests are kids.
Yes, your friends should have not taken the food without letting you know, but it must have been excellent. A true compliment to you!
