Recently, I received the question, “When do the kids’ parties stop?”

It’s an excellent question…and there is no “hard and fast” answer. Generally, each year of your kid’s life should be celebrated in a special way…sometimes with a party, sometimes with a small family celebration, etc. So, I don’t think celebrating ever ends…but it will change.

Kids up to the age of 13 will appreciate traditional kids’ parties….and the first teen birthday is just huge…so having friends over with activities, age-appropriate games and themes, fun party food and cake…this age-old formula will work well.

After 13, birthdays can be celebrated in a more low-key fashion, i.e. having a few friends out for a fun day, i.e. to an amusement park or to a spa for a manicure and lunch. As much as you will welcome this change, so will your kid as he is growing up as well.

The one exception is the girls’ Sweet 16 Party. Traditionally, this is another opportunity for a big party, it could range from being casual to formal, depending on your kid, your budget, and the expectations. So, this may be the one last big traditional birthday party opportunity.

After the 16th, kids may celebrate their 18th and 21st, but I bet these will be celebrations they organize on their own with their friends!
