Australia Day is the country’s national day of celebration, much like the 4th of July in the US. So how do Australians celebrate with their family and friends?

“Pop over and throw a few snags & chops on the barbie, knock a few coldies down, bring the softies for the ankle bitters, plonk your butt and have a natter, it will be a ripper of a day.” or—as we say— “Come over and enjoy a BBQ, have some drinks and soda pop for the kids, and stay awhile for a chat.”

If you are looking for ideas on how to celebrate Australia Day with your kids, or teach your kids a bit about Australia— make a Swagman’s Hat or an origami Koala! Serve Vegemite sandwiches, Milo, and Lamingtons, or check out these ideas

In just a week’s time, schools will be closed in celebration of Martin Luther King’s birthday.  With the kids home from school, you may want to gather your kid and a few of her friends together to learn about Martin Luther King

My 12-year old son was indirectly invited to a birthday party with only one day’s notice. He really wants to go because they are all friends. I think it is unacceptable, is it?

An invitation with such short notice is unacceptable under most circumstances. If you don’t have any other plans on, there’s no harm in your son attending, and you could bring it up with the host parent if appropriate.  However, I remember when I was 12, I was not very popular in my class, but all of a sudden, that changed one day, the other kids just had a change of heart toward me, and I was invited to a lot of parties that I had not received the real invitation to attend.  My mother was furious that I would think of attending when wasn’t given a proper invitation and these kids hadn’t been  particularly nice to me. I didn’t care, I just wanted to attend and be with everyone.  Funny situations crop up around these pre-teen years.
