Earth Day - April 22

Earth Day is a time to come together and celebrate our great planet and discuss how we can take care of her for generations to come. Enjoy bringing the day alive for your kids through simple activities and discussion.

  1. If you don't already have a bird feeder in your yard, purchase an inexpensive one, fill with seeds, and watch the birds enjoy their snacks. It would be great to bird watch who comes for a visit and learn about the local birds in your area.
  2. Plant a tree in your yard or a row of tulip bulbs that will bloom each spring.
  3. Clean up your neighborhood. Grab a trash bag and a pair of gloves, and go out on a trash hunt. You may want to organize this activity with other families in your neighborhood, or to clean up a local park. [check out more ...]
Garden Party

This is a favorite party for very small children all the way to school-aged children. When really small, the children may enjoy being with their parents or playing with their friends in the sun while parents socialize, while older children can have lots of fun not only playing buggy games, but learning a thing or two as well.

A lot of the activities in this type of a party will not take long to organize, and the colors can be chosen by the birthday kid. A suggestion would be red for ladybugs, yellow for butterflies, and green for grass.

If very small, provide the flowerpot with your child's name and birth date painted on it. Plant the seeds of your child's birth flower and give those to the parents. You could also provide little healthy snacks for the small children as well. If you don't want to plant the flower, just provide the seeds with a few small sand toys in there as well. Simple Chalk Sidewalk Fun

This spring and summer if you are looking for some easy party fun that is budget-friendly and creative, look no further than a box of sidewalk chalk. When the kids arrive, each kid could get several chalk sticks tied with a ribbon. The party activities can take place around the chalk. For games and activities using this magic stuff, check out these ideas.

Obviously one key to using sidewalk chalk in all of these different types of activities is to have plenty of space and good weather. Really, if you have these two things, the afternoon will fly by with creative games and art. As a favor, give each guest a new stick of chalk to take home to continue the fun! [more...]

From Our Sponsor - A Spring Party

Ah, springtime...new growth is everywhere! Spring forward into this lovely season and delight your little buds with our spring party ideas! Get started with the fun springtime party tips for kids detailed below, or check out Birthday in a Box's complete Spring Party Guide.

Decorating
Get your guests to "think spring" by decorating the party area with clusters of balloons and twists of streamers in spring colors, such as lavender, pink, green, and yellow. Draw ladybugs, bees, flowers, bunnies, and other spring critters on poster board, cut out the images, and hang them on the walls of the party area. Use plates, cups and other party supplies featuring a spring pattern.

Food
Feed your guests a few yummy spring treats, like "Worms in Dirt" (i.e. layers of chocolate pudding, crushed chocolate cookies, and gummy worms) and a flower- or bug-shaped cake. For more substantial fare, cut peanut butter and jelly or cheese sandwiches into rabbit or butterfly shapes using a cookie cutter. You can also arrange veggies in rows on a tray to look like a garden, and then let your little bunnies graze on it throughout the party.

Party Activities
Take-Home Garden - Allow the children to decorate clay plant pots with colorful markers. Once the pots are decorated, have each child drop in a small stone or piece of Styrofoam to cover the hole in the bottom. Then, let your guests scoop some potting soil into their pots and sprinkle a few flower seeds over the soil. Cover each pot with plastic wrap, and secure the plastic wrap in place with a rubber band for the trip home. Visit Birthday in a Box for more fun and easy springtime games and activities!

Ladybug Party

Here are some fun ideas for a Ladybug party this spring and summer.

For an activity, supply each guest with a bug catcher kit that has a net and a clear plastic bug holder. Release real ladybugs and have them try and catch as many as they can. The "goody bag" could be that they take their container of ladybugs home with them, and release them in their own backyards. [more...]

Trend Watch: KGOY

Have you heard of KGOY?  It stands for Kids Getting Older Younger, and is a trend that is happening with this current generation of kids.

And in a recent NY Times article, it has hit the kids' party scene in a big way.  The articles points out numerous examples of children between the ages of 6 and 9 primping at salons, including manis and pedis, pink limo rides, reading grown up magazines at the salon...making themselves over is the big trend.  This is spurred on by TV shows like "America's Next Top Model" and the celebrity=crazy society we are living in.  Many kids believe they are primping for their own star moment.
